The Presidents Cup is making its way back to Canada for the first time in 17 years, returning to the fairways of Royal Montreal in 2024.
“Royal Montreal Golf Club served as a memorable venue in 2007 and has been a fitting test for the PGA Tour throughout the years” says PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan, adding that “Canadian fans have a reputation on our Tour as some of the most passionate and knowledgeable in the game.” In addition to Canada’s robust fan base, Monahan cited the successes of the Mackenzie Tour, and the overwhelming support of the RBC Canadian Open as contributing factors that led to the iconic event’s return.
Royal Montreal Golf Club is no stranger to big events, hosting the Canadian Open numerous times, most recently in 2014, and in 2007 becoming the first—and only—Canadian course to host the Presidents Cup. Golf fans will remember that year’s electric Sunday matchup between Mike Weir and Tiger Woods, which resulted in Weir beating Woods 1 up in dramatic fashion. Despite Weir’s homegrown heroics, the international team was unable to complete the comeback as the United States took home a comfortable five-point victory.
Although Royal Montreal Golf Club’s hosting of the event is four years away, Canadians should like their chances at having the maple leaf represented at North America’s oldest golf club. Canadian PGA Tour winners Adam Hadwin, Nick Taylor, Mackenzie Hughes and Corey Conners are all strong contenders, with Conners and Hadwin having past Presidents Cup experience. “We’ve all traveled across the world and played professional golf, and Canadian fans show up everywhere,” said Hadwin. “To have this big of an event in Canada and to be able to represent the International Team and the maple leaf would be such an honour.”
Although no longer a contender to make the team as a player, Mike Weir could potentially be named team captain for 2024, a possibility that he said would be “huge honour” and something that he would “really relish” if the opportunity came his way.
In addition to today’s President Cup news, Commissioner Monahan announced The First Tee development program will be expanded to include chapters in Canada. The First Tee is a global initiative that seeks to enrich the lives of young people through the game of golf, teaching them values that can be carried with them throughout their lives.
The next Presidents Cup is scheduled for 2022 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
