TaylorMade’s Spider FCG is aimed at golfers who love their blade, but want a mallet

Mallet-style putters have been the rage for several years now, but that doesn’t mean everyone is prepared to give up their traditional blade. TaylorMade recognizes that, which is why the company has developed Spider FCG (forward center of gravity), will be available for preorder on August 14 and in stores September 4 is a putter aimed at the traditionalist who wants the forgiveness of a mallet.

The concept is in the name—Spider FCG, which stands for forward center of gravity. Bill Price, who runs TaylorMade’s putters line, says the concept was simple—find a mallet-style putter that would address the concerns of the players who continue to use traditional blade-style putters. And yes, if you’re thinking Tiger Woods, that would certainly be the type of player TaylorMade was considering when developing the Spider FCG.

“We were looking at guys who use a blade putter and have more rotation in their stroke, versus the more modern guys who are straight-and-back,” Price explained. “The guys who use the blade would explain what they wanted and what they are really talking about is having the CG (center of gravity) closer to the face so they can rotate through. That’s what this does.”

Key technologies

Forward CG

By front-loading the putter, the player gets the feel and release of a blade.

Tungsten weighting

Weights in the heel and toe optimize forward loading.

CU Copper PURE ROLL

This insert offers a firmer feel and sound, while increasing topspin and forward roll.

Who is it for?

“The width of the sole of the club is the width of the blade,” says Price. “And that’s really why it appeals to a player who rotates through the putt.” Price says the rumoured concept has already captured the imaginations of several PGA Tour players, who reached out to the company in recent weeks. “These are players with a forward press who want the feel of a blade putter, but the forgiveness of Spider. They are going to love this.”
