Return of the Mac

Six years.

That’s the time between Canadian Mackenzie Hughes’ first win and his second. Hughes, from Dundas, Ont., won in a two-hole player over Sepp Straka at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss. on Sunday.

“I kept telling myself the whole week that I was going to do it,” Hughes said immediately after his playoff win. “That was the only thing I saw in my mind and those par saves down the stretch, I was trying to will the ball in the hole. That kind of describes my game a bit.”

Hughes rolled in a birdie putt on the second playoff hole to better Straka, whose birdie putt rolled by the hole. The pair split the first playoff hole with par putts.

Hughes is the second Canadian to win the Sanderson Farms, following British Columbia’s Nick Taylor, who won the event in 2014. Hughes’ first win came at the RSM Classic in 2016 when he was a rookie on the PGA Tour. Hughes said he’s learned to try to slow down as the game moves faster when you’re in contention. “I just think that I’ve had a few chances since then, obviously, to win,” he said, “and on Sunday things can move faster, and it can be harder to stay in your own rhythm, in your own game.”

Hughes put himself in contention in the second round of the Sanderson with an impressive 9-under par 63 that vaulted him up the leaderboard. He entered the final round of the tournament one shot behind Mark Hubbard. Hughes said he played with Hubbard on PGA Tour Canada in an event near Peterborough and finished second. This time, with Hubbard shooting 2-over, Hughes walked away with the win. Hubbard might have had an excuse—his daughter accidently knocked a knife off a counter just prior to the tournament, and the implement landing on Hubbard’s foot, keeping him from practicing coming into the Sanderson.

Hughes came into the tournament ranked No. 82 in the world, and was passed over for the Presidents Cup. Former Sanderson Farms winner Taylor finished in a tie for 19th, while fellow Canadians Mike Gligic and Adam Hadwin also made the cut, finishing in a tie for 45th, while Adam Svensson closed in T54.
