PGA Championship Returns To Rochester’s Legendary Oak Hill

The year’s second major sneaks up on you quickly. Can Justin Thomas repeat, or the Jon Rahm juggernaut continue? What impact will Rory McIlroy’s “home game” have on his play?

Oak Hill. It is one of golf’s legendary venues, a classic Donald Ross course that is renowned for hosting golf’s biggest championships. And great champions have won—think Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, who have won the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship at the venue.

The course was recently renovated to return many of its classic features, so this is a different golf course than the one Jason Dufner won at 10 years ago. The elements that made the course one of the best in the U.S. have been returned and this PGA Championship will be the first time it gets to show off the restoration to the world.

The Field

The PGA Championship always has a strange mixed field, with PGA of America club pros playing alongside many of the best in the world. To many it is the weakest of the major championships because of the field consistency. That said, the best in the world—including golfers from the breakaway LIV Golf Tour—are in the field.

Who to watch

Jon Rahm

The world’s top golfer is on remarkable run, with 12 Top 10 finishes, including five wins, in his last 15 starts. He took the Masters in his last major appearance, and Oak Hill should set up very well for Rahm, who has the mix of power and finesse to conquer the complex greens and fairways of the classic course.

Justin Thomas

The defending champion, Thomas has not played particularly well—at least by his standards—since winning the PGA Championship last year. Thomas has made a change to his putting, adopting the Aim Point system, and hopes that will improve his play on the greens.

Rory McIlroy

Some are calling McIlroy’s appearance at Oak Hill a “home game.” That’s because Erica Stoll, McIlroy’s wife, is from Rochester. McIlroy should be a force at the PGA Championship, with four wins since last year’s event, including the RBC Canadian Open. But he’s been very Jekyll and Hyde since then, either playing very well or missing the cut altogether, including dropping out of the RBC Heritage just before the tournament started. Which Rory will show up at Oak Hill?

The Canadians

A strong group of Canadians are in the PGA Championship field this week, including Taylor Pendrith, Corey Conners, Adam Svensson, Adam Hadwin, Mackenzie Hughes, and Nick Taylor.

  1. No one to watch from LIV? I think we’ll see at least one of those guys close to the top in the final round…
