With four birdies in his last six holes, Scottie Scheffler matched leader Patrick Cantlay at 16-under and forced a playoff. At the third playoff hole, Scheffler sank a clutch 25-footer for birdie. Cantlay missed, and Scheffler had his first PGA Tour victory. The win ignited what was to be a dominant stretch of performances that vaulted him into the coveted World Number One spot.

Sam Ryder’s Ace for the Ages

With a grandstand full of spectators surrounding the hole, the Par 3, 16th makes for an intimidating tee shot. Sam Ryder’s wedge from 125 yards bounced once, then twice and then spun left, as if tied on a string, into the hole. The crowd erupted and began showering the green with beer. It was just the 10th hole-in-one recorded in competition at the WMPO.

Carlos Ortiz again brought the grandstand to life with the second ace at #16 in consecutive days. Pandemonium raged, along with more beer cans, as Ryder and Ortiz became the first pair to make an ace at 16 in the same tournament since 1997. At the Par 4 17th, Ortiz’s tee shot found the green, and he sank a 13-footer for back-to-back eagles.

In just his 11th appearance since receiving his tour card, 24-year-old Sahith Theegala found himself atop the leaderboard after 36 holes. While he could not ward off Scheffler and Cantlay with a final round 70, the third-place finish cemented Theegala as a week-to-week threat.

More fireworks at #16. Harry Higgs celebrated a par by lifting his shirt to roars of approval from the crowd. His partner, Joel Dahmen, followed by taking his polo off and swinging it around as more beer showers followed. There’s truly nothing like #16 at TPC Scottsdale.

5 Things to Watch at the 2023 WMPO

Honouring Tom Weiskopf

The 16-time PGA Tour winner and designer of the beloved Stadium Course passed away in August. At the first WMPO since his death, players will look to honour Weiskopf’s contributions to the game of golf.

The Best of the Best

Earlier this week, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, and Matt Fitzpatrick officially joined an already-loaded field featuring names such as reigning champ Scheffler and World No 1 McIlroy. The field features 19 of the top 20 players in the world.

Fresh off a Farmers Insurance Open victory, Max Homa has been a man on a mission of late. The win at Torrey Pines was his third top-five finish in a row and already his second victory of the season. Keep your eye out for him at the top of the leaderboard.

Including his two victories, the 30-year-old from Japan has four top-5 and five top-10 finishes at the WMPO in just nine starts. This time around, he will look to tie the record for most Waste Management Phoenix Open victories with three.

Star-Studded Pro-Am

The lineup for this year’s Annexus Pro-Am might be the best yet. From Michael Phelps to Jerome Bettis to Albert Pujols, there will be some elite pairings teeing off on February 8.
