Consistently one of the toughest courses in the Open Championship rota, Carnoustie—occasionally dubbed “Car-nasty”—will surely provide a stern test for this year’s field. This will be the eighth playing of the Open Championship at Carnoustie, which has seen legends like Tommy Armour, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Tom Watson earn victory on its fairways.
Here are Golf Town’s picks for a few players that could add their name to the Claret Jug at this year’s tournament.
Tommy Fleetwood
Currently 10th in the Official World Golf Rankings, Fleetwood is due for his first major championship. And after a closing 63 to finish second at the U.S. Open a few weeks ago, he’s looking to be in fine form heading into Carnoustie. Fleetwood has already proved his worth at Carnoustie too—he set the course record last year in the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Tiger Woods
We know what you’re thinking. Woods has had an up and down first few months of his return, but all things considered, it should still be viewed as an abundant success. The last two Open Championships at Carnoustie saw Woods finish in 7th (1999) and 12th (2007). Woods will be looking to add his name to the Claret Jug for the fourth time, and if his ball striking remains as good as it has been so far this season, a victory at Carnoustie is certainly a possibility.
Brooks Koepka
As the two-time defending U.S. Open Champion, the long-hitting Koepka has already proven he can handle himself in majors. In his last two Open Championship appearances, Koepka has finished 6th (2017) and 10th (2015). He will be looking to improve on these results this year at Carnoustie and add his third major championship.
Dustin Johnson
Always a threat in any major championship, Johnson comes into The Open as the top-ranked player in world. Fresh off a runaway victory at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and a third-place finish at the U.S. Open, Johnson is looking like a great pick to add his name to the Claret Jug at Carnoustie. Leading the PGA Tour in par 4 scoring this season, Johnson will be a great fit for Carnoustie, as navigating it’s long, challenging 4s will be a key to success.
Jordan Spieth
As the defending Open champion, Spieth is a natural favourite at this year’s tournament. Despite having a disappointing year so far—with his best finish a 3rd at the Masters—history tells us that Spieth is always well-prepared for the majors. The three-time major champion will be looking to become the first back-to-back winner of the Open Championship since Padraig Harrington in 2007 and 2008.
Adam Hadwin
The lone Canadian in the Open field, Hadwin will be looking for his first major championship title. Hadwin missed the cut last year in his only Open Championship start, but his ability to find fairways and greens consistently will aid him around the tough Carnoustie layout.
Dark Horse—Sergio Garcia
Garcia hasn’t played his best this season, but he is always a force to be reckoned with at the Open Championship. He’s had ten top-10 finishes at the Open in his career, including a runner-up finish in 2007, the last time the event was held at Carnoustie. Look for Garcia to make a late Sunday charge and capture his second major championship.
Adam Hadwin?????????????????????????????????????????
and Sergio is a dark horse?
I notice no one takes credit for this masterpiece.
