Mike Weir Named Assistant Captain for Presidents Cup in September

Canada’s Mike Weir will be an assistant captain at the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow in North Carolina in September, the third time the golfer has held such a role.

Many see it as a precursor for appointing Weir as captain when the tournament returns to Royal Montreal, outside of Montreal, Que., in 2024. Weir, a Golf Town ambassador, has said he’s hopeful of being offered the role. In 2007, Weir bettered Tiger Woods in a match on Sunday at Royal Montreal, one of the highlights of the week and one of the fabled moments in Canadian golf history.

“When I think of highlights in my career that really stand out to me, the Presidents Cup always makes the top of the list,” Weir said. “The camaraderie that continues to grow within this team is irreplaceable.”

Weir will support team captain Trevor Immelman alongside other assistant captains, including Korea’s K.J. Choi, Australian Geoff Ogilvy, and Columbia’s Camilo Villegas. The International team, comprising of 12 players from outside of the United States and Europe, will play the American team for the title.

Weir is in the midst of a return to form on the PGA Tour Champions, the league for players over the age of 50. He had 12 Top 10 finishes last year on the tour, including a win. Weir, from Brights Grove, Ont., served as an assistant captain in 2017 and 2019, and competed in five Presidents Cups, with a record of 13-9-2.

Currently there’s a good chance three Canadians—Adam Hadwin, Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes—could be on the International team. Conners is ranked No. 8 in the points standings, followed by Hughes at 10 and Hadwin at 13.
