Brooke Henderson nearly captured her second-career major championship title at the ANA Inspiration at the beginning of September. Now she’s eager for another great finish at another major – one where she’s had a ton of success in the past.
The 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship takes place Oct. 8-11 at Aronimink Golf Club, just outside Philadelphia. The club has hosted the PGA Championship before (and will again in 2026) along with three other PGA Tour events.
The Women’s PGA Championship is the major Brooke has played the best at in her career. Starting in 2015 with a T5 after she received a Sponsor Exemption, she won the tournament the following year. She finished runner-up in 2017 and T6 in 2018. Last season she made the cut on the number but rallied over the weekend to finish T30.
The most impressive thing about Brooke’s finishes at this particular major championship is that every year the tournament moves to a different golf course. No matter where it’s contested she comes up with a solid early-week game plan and executes!
FEELING COMFORTABLE
Brooke said, despite the fact that the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship goes to different golf courses every year, there’s always a sense of familiarity for her.
“They always do a great job of setting up, they always pick great golf courses and they always treat the players really well so it’s always a really fun major to play in,” said Brooke. “Right from the start it was a tournament that I loved and I’ve been able to compete at the highest level every year.
“I just feel like there is great energy there and having won it in 2016 I love seeing the trophy and I love seeing my poster up!”
Brooke is playing the Shoprite LPGA Classic after passing on the LPGA Tour’s event in Portland – although she has won it twice before – due to the environmental issues in Oregon at the time.
Brooke and her sister Brittany have started to better understand all the COVID-19 protocols that are in place for travelling with the LPGA Tour. That added comfort has helped her game, she said.
She will arrive at the Women’s PGA Championship on Sunday night and head to the course Monday morning.
“That’s where Brit shines,” said Brooke about her sister and caddie Brittany. “She’ll get a lot of good numbers and walk the course and we’ll get some good lines together and really come up with a strategy where we can beat the golf course and get under par.”
Brooke said during a major championship week there’s a little more work that gets put in early on versus a typical LPGA Tour event. At major events she tries to make sure her game is in top form.
“I’ll probably practice a little bit more Monday-Wednesday. We’ll work hard, practice, try to get a strategy together, Brit will do her job, and hopefully tee it up Thursday and get in a solid round,” she said.
MAJOR MOTIVATION
Although this year’s LPGA Tour schedule has been unlike any other, Brooke said she’s excited for another major championship opportunity – especially after falling just short at the ANA Inspiration.
Although she missed the cut at the RICOH Women’s Open, she said she didn’t feel that far off that week or the following week in Arkansas.
She said she could take a lot of positives from her runner-up result at the ANA Inspiration especially with two majors left on the LPGA calendar.
“To finish T2 at any major is awesome,” said Brooke. “Especially there, my previous high finish was T10. It was nice to play that golf course a little better and be right there in contention… and being birthday week too it was pretty cool.”
Now Brooke heads to another major championship with momentum and confidence!
The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship starts October 8th.
Awesome, you do us Proud!!!!
Brooke, you will always be considered an awesome talent and a great ambassador of the game. My opinion for you is to make absolutely sure that your putting distance is as sharp as possible. No matter what, leave all your approach shots below the hole.
