40-31 of SCOREGolf‘s Top 59 Canadian Public Golf Courses

40. Deerhurst Highlands

Huntsville, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 6

The course that first put Ontario’s Muskoka region on the golfing map, Deerhurst Highlands remains a solid layout with some very intriguing holes. The late Bob Cupp and Thomas McBroom collaborated on the design.

39. Fox Harb’r

Wallace, N.S. Giveaway Date: August 6

While this course is set to be redone by Tom McBroom and Doug Carrick, the original from Graham Cooke still holds up as a solid test with some holes on the Northumberland Strait and some through wooded areas and over wetlands.

38. Nicklaus North

Whistler, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 7

Nicklaus North is cut through a valley floor at the base of snow-capped mountains and around emerald-coloured lakes. And the course really is as stunning as that description sounds. It is also one of few that architect Jack Nicklaus put his name on, which should tell you something.

37. The Nest at Friday Harbour

Innisfil, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 7

Doug Carrick provides golfers wide fairways off the tee and tricky green surrounds to keep golfers on their toes at The Nest at Friday Harbour. Short grass abounds on this course, which boasts excellent conditioning and some spectacular holes.

36. Tower Ranch

Kelowna, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 7

Dropping hundreds of feet over its 18 holes and putting golfers high above fairways on many tee decks, Tom McBroom’s Tower Ranch is a delight. Its vistas extend for miles, and some superb holes on the back nine ensure an excellent finish.

35. Northern Bear

Sherwood Park, Alta. – Giveaway Date: August 8

Laid out over flat, forested property, Northern Bear is a pleasurable course designed by Jack Nicklaus that features some strategic green and fairway slopes, ideally located bunkers and variety in its holes.

34. Cobble Beach

Owen Sound, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 8

Few courses offer as striking views from start to finish as Cobble Beach, which rests on undulating property overlooking Georgian Bay. The links-like design challenges golfers with plenty of fescue and short-grass collection areas around its greens.

33. Taboo

Gravenhurst, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 8

Designed by Ron Garl and reworked in recent years by Alan Chudnovsky, Taboo is a strong resort course in Ontario cottage country with a number of challenging holes featuring the granite rock outcroppings that have come to define Muskoka golf.

32. Tarandowah

Avon, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 9

One of the best and truest links-like designs in Canada, Tarandowah lays on rumpled land peppered with fescue-lined pot bunkers and brilliant green complexes. The Martin Hawtree design is particularly challenging when the wind whips and is one of the Canada’s best values.

31. Eagle Ranch

Eagle Ranch Golf

Invermere, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 9

The Columbia River, Lake Windermere and the Rocky and Purcell mountain ranges are the backdrops for several holes at Eagle Ranch, which is perched on an ancient bluff and continues to delight golfers with its excellent layout.
