30-21 of SCOREGolf‘s Top 59 Canadian Public Golf Courses

30. Bear Mountain – Valley

Victoria, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 9

The subtler of the two courses at Bear Mountain Resort, the Valley Course is a dramatic track nonetheless with wonderful elevation changes and striking holes. The par-3 14th, with its tee-to-green waste bunker, and the risk-reward par-5 15th makes for a great duo.

29. The Ridge at Manitou

McKellar, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 10

One of many Tom McBroom courses in, or close to, Ontario’s Muskoka region, The Ridge at Manitou contains all the rocky elements of a cottage-country track and boasts one of the best finishers in the nation: a par 5 with a green set on Manitouwabing Lake.

28. Dundarave

Roseneath, P.E.I. – Giveaway Date: August 10

Dundarave is a Prince Edward Island treat thanks to its red-sand bunkering, tall trees and ever-present Brudenell River. The eighth playing across the river is its signature hole and one of the nicest par 4s in Atlantic Canada.

27. Talking Rock

Chase, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 10

Largely the work of Wayne Carleton, Talking Rock weaves its way through a beautiful parcel of forested land adjacent the Little Shuswap Lake, on which the final hole resides. The downhill par-3 15th, with the lake shimmering in the distance, is simply spectacular.

26. Copper Creek

Kleinburg, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 11

Copper Creek is a Doug Carrick design with an excellent stretch of holes winding through a wooded valley. The par-4 10th, with its plummeting tee shot and water lurking along the left side, makes for a nerve-wracking tee shot.

25. Kananaskis Country – Mt. Lorette

10876 Pic18

Kananaskis, Alta. – Giveaway Date: August 11

Though the Mt. Lorette course is less spectacular than its sister track, it is a delight nonetheless and the club’s setting in the Kananaskis Valley at the base of the Rocky Mountains is one of the best in Canada. A winding river and several lakes add to the challenge.

24. Black Bear Ridge

Belleville, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 11

The best holes on this well-conditioned Brian Magee design, situated just north of Highway 401, are those coming home. The 17th is a real stunner thanks to its elevated tee deck and tree-lined fairway and the par-5 18th is a harder-than-it-looks finishing hole with its raised green site and false front.

23. Predator Ridge – Predator

Vernon, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 12

The original course at the Predator Ridge Resort is heavy on elevation changes, windswept fescue areas, pot bunkers and multi-tiered greens. A highlight is the par-5 14th, designed in the Cape style as golfers must decide how much of a hazard to carry off the tee.

22. Waskesiu

Waskesiu Lake, Sask. – Giveaway Date: August 12

Making its first appearance on the Top 59 after cracking last year’s Top 100 ranking, Waskesiu is all about the ground. Humps and bumps and slopes abound as golfers are both challenged and aided by the contour of the course throughout. In Prince Albert National Park, it was designed by Stanley Thompson and park engineer J.H. Atkinson.

21. TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley – North

Caledon, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 12

Big changes are afoot on the North course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, with owners eyeing a future Canadian Open. As it stands now, the parkland-style course has sweeping fairways, terrific green sites and a phenomenal risk-reward closing par 5.
