20-11 of SCOREGolf‘s Top 59 Canadian Public Golf Courses
20. The Algonquin
St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, N.B. – Giveaway Date: August 13
Completely renovated by Rod Whitman, The Algonquin is truly an Atlantic Canada destination course. Beautiful bunkers and cool greens can be found throughout the course but undoubtedly the first four holes on the back nine, with their ocean views, are the highlight.
19. Eagles Nest
Maple, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 13
Eagles Nest is a bold, dramatic Doug Carrick design with fairways cut through sculpted dunes growing golden fescue. A former gravel quarry, the property’s high points offer views of the CN Tower some 30 kilometres away.
18. TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley – Heathlands
Caledon, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 13
The OG course at the popular 54-hole TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, the Heathlands is a sturdy test of golf inspired by the great links courses of Scotland with its pot bunkers, fescue rough and exposed green sites. It moves back ahead of the facility’s North course on this ranking.
17. Kananaskis Country – Mt. Kidd
Kananaskis, Alta. – Giveaway Date: August 14
The Mt. Kidd course at Kananaskis Country is pure eye-candy, both for its mountainous background and superb holes that Gary Browning recreated — and improved upon — after the course was ruined by Alberta’s historic 2013 flood.
16. TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley – Hoot
Caledon, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 14
The best of the three courses at TPC Toronto, the Hoot is the property’s “wasteland” design and contains assignments framed by tall pines, rugged waste bunkers and several watery graves coming home. It is a fantastic mix of challenging and breather holes.
15. Big Sky
Pemberton, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 14
The scenery, with Mount Currie looming over the course, gets a lot of the love at Big Sky, but the holes that the late Bob Cupp designed require golfers to be smart, precise and creative. This is a very good golf course in a gorgeous setting.
14. The Links at Crowbush Cove
Morell, P.E.I. – Giveaway Date: August 15
Tom McBroom hit a homerun with this seaside delight on the north shore of Prince Edward Island. Crowbush Cove is a links-inspired design with rolling fairways, pot bunkers and multi-tiered greens. It is a popular play among Islanders and visitors.
13. Rocky Crest (Resort)
MacTier, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 15
A ClubLink course offering play to resort guests, Rocky Crest was the template for the many Muskoka, Ont., courses that followed. By routing holes around and over rocky outcroppings, Tom McBroom ushered in a new design style.
12. Stewart Creek
Canmore, Alta. – Giveaway Date: August 15
Stewart Creek is a great example of an architect showing restraint when building a modern-day mountain course. Gary Browning’s holes are smart, fair and well-designed, with the added bonus of having the Rocky Mountains towering over them.
11. Tobiano
Kamloops, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 16
Tobiano’s setting overlooking the lovely Kamloops Lake is simply spectacular. Tom McBroom’s holes run through dunes and over canyons and while some of the forced carries are a big ask, the opportunities to pull off heroic shots here are plentiful.
