10-1 of SCOREGolf‘s Top 59 Canadian Public Golf Courses
10. Predator Ridge – Ridge
Vernon, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 16
Contrasting the linksy Predator course, the Ridge course at Predator Ridge is pretty personified with Doug Carrick crafting holes through and around a wooded hillside, exposed rock outcroppings, tall trees and the shimmering waters of Lake Okanagan.
9. Humber Valley
Deer Lake, N.L. – Giveaway Date: August 16
As remote as Humber Valley is, it’s nice to see it get love from SCOREGolf panellists. With holes starting high above the Humber River and then snaking around it, Humber Valley offers a great experience. Its tumbling 10th is among the best tee shots in Canada.
8. Greywolf
Panorama, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 17
Greywolf is known mostly for its Cliffhanger hole and for good reason: the stunning par 3 spans a canyon and plays to a precipice of a green backed by a mountain. But the course is more than one frame. It is fantastic overall mountain design by Doug Carrick.
7. Muskoka Bay
Gravenhurst, Ont. – Giveaway Date: August 17
Doug Carrick made building in marshy terrain through the Canadian shield look easy at Muskoka Bay. The challenging course takes advantage of the exposed rock to provide some unique looks and requires every shot in your bag.
6. Sagebrush
Merritt, B.C. – Giveaway Date: August 17
The site for Sagebrush was not exactly made for golf, but Richard Zokol, Rod Whitman and Armen Suny built an awesome adventure, nonetheless. Blind shots, uphill shots, downhill shots, sidehill shots — Sagebrush is a place where the more creative you are, the better you’ll score.
5. Cape Breton Highlands Links
Ingonish Beach, N.S. – Giveaway Date: August 18
Stanley Thompson’s mountains and ocean course is rarely pristine, but its genius routing and design cannot be dismissed. From the ocean, into a mountain valley, along the Clyburn River, back to the ocean again, and all on mogul-filled fairways, Highlands Links is a unique treasure.
4. Fairmont Banff Springs
Banff, Alta. – Giveaway Date: August 18
If beautiful bunkering does it for you, you won’t find a bigger treat than Banff Springs. Add to that the iconic course’s mountainous setting, the rushing Bow River and the Devil’s Cauldron fourth hole, and Banff is a bucket-list course to be sure.
3. Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge
Jasper, Alta. – Giveaway Date: August 18
Fun factor carries the biggest percentage of SCOREGolf’s nine rating criteria so it’s easy to see why Jasper ranks so highly. It’s a terrific design with a wide variety of holes in as beautiful of a setting as there is in golf. The classic course has few rivals when it comes to an enjoyable day.
2. Cabot Links
Inverness, N.S. – Giveaway Date: August 19
While not as dramatic as its sister course Cabot Cliffs, Cabot Links is Canada’s purest golf experience. Rod Whitman’s authentic links has firm and fast fescue fairways, double-greens, ocean-side holes, ancient-looking bunkers, contoured land and the ever-present ocean winds.
1. Cabot Cliffs
Inverness, N.S. – Giveaway Date: August 19
Cabot Cliffs continues its streak atop every SCOREGolf course ranking since it opened in 2015. The country’s most jaw-dropping track on its most dramatic piece of land has 18 enjoyable and diverse holes, including several high atop cliffs overlooking the Northumberland Strait.
My wife (18 hcp) & I (14 hcp) recently did a Cross Canada Drive (67 days) & played the following courses & this is how we rank them:
1-Cabot Cliffs 2-Cape Breton Highland Links 3-Glen Abbey 4-Algonquin 5-The Links at Crowbush Cove 6-Dundarave 7-Dakota Dunes (SK) 8-Mill River (PEI) 9-Humber Valley. We also played Falcon Lake (MB), Links at the Lake (MB) and Club de golf de Matane (QC) (poor shape, lots of rain damage & 2 temp greens in mid-June). We met great people at all the courses but Algonquin & Highland Links pro shop staff were remarkable. Humber Valley, although very scenic & nice greens, rated low in our opinion due to no washroom facilities on the course, poor pro shop merchandise, poor food & drink to go options at the turn. As stated, this was our opinion & based on the day we played, some were pretty rainy days (Cliffs & Mill River). Most of these will be a “1 time only” play, but did enjoy playing them all. Thank you for reading.
I can attest to the rankings of some of these courses that I have played. Please see comments below.
Black Bear Ridge ranked too high
Taboo ranked too high
Deerhurst Highlands ranked too high
Gallaghers Canyon ranked way too low
Manoir Richelieu really ranked way too low
