20-11 OF SCOREGOLF‘S TOP 100 CANADIAN COURSES

20. Mickelson National Golf Club – Private
Calgary, Alberta

First-time eligible Mickelson National debuts in strong fashion at number 20. Largely the work of Mickelson Design’s Rick Smith, with input from Lefty himself, this course was built with wide playing corridors, well-protected greens and enough risk-reward assignments to make aggressive plays very tempting.

19. Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club –Private
Vancouver, B.C.

A two-time RBC Canadian Open host, Shaughnessy is known for its tiny greens and narrow fairways lined by tall trees. Prototypical of the Pacific Northwest, it is a course that rewards smart choices and accuracy off the tee.

18. Greywolf Golf Club – Public
Panorama, B.C. Giveaway Date: July 26

While the highlight of Greywolf is the par-3 sixth hole, known as Cliffhanger, this Doug Carrick course is an all-around great test and enjoyable round marked by dramatic elevation changes and pristine conditioning.

17. Victoria Golf Club – Private
Victoria B.C.

There aren’t many better days on a golf course than at Victoria Golf Club, an A.V. Macan designed restored in recent years by Jeff Mingay. With several front-nine holes on the Pacific Ocean, and beautiful vistas throughout, this course earns its moniker as Canada’s Pebble Beach.

16. Memphrémagog Golf Club – Private
Magog, Quebec

Memphremagog, a private haunt with little play, is a bold Thomas McBroom creation that calls for every shot in your bag. The conditions here are pristine, and its well-manicured greens are among the very best in the country.

15. Blackhawk Golf Club – Private
Nisku, Alberta

Even if they didn’t know it beforehand, keen golf course enthusiasts might recognize Blackhawk as a Rod Whitman design given the shaping of its rugged bunkers, contoured fairways and greens that feature a ton of movement. The Edmonton-area course moves up two spots to number 15.

14. Oviinbyrd Golf Club – Private
Foot’s Bay, Ontario

The best golf course in the Ontario cottage country playground that is Muskoka, Thomas McBroom’s Oviinbyrd is a spectacular piece of work that, while challenging, is not as difficult as other McBroom courses. The result is a layout our panellists love.

13. Sagebrush Golf Club – Public
Quilchena, B.C. Giveaway Date: July 26

Call it a comeback. Closed for years due to a long-running saga involving ownership changes, permit problems and lawsuits, Sagebrush is welcoming golfers once again and returns to being one of the best courses in Canada. A minimalist design built into a hillside overlooking Nicola Lake, the course was designed by founder Richard Zokol with Rod Whitman and Armen Suny.

12. Westmount Golf and Country Club – Private
Kitchener, Ontario

Stanley Thompson’s Westmount may fly under the radar given the renown of other Thompson courses in Canada, but it has always received love from our panellists. And for good reason. The city course has gorgeous rolling fairways, terrific greens, and some of the best par 4s in the country.

11. Beacon Hall Golf Club – Private
Aurora, Ontario

Beacon Hall remains just outside Canada’s top 10, checking in at number 11 once again. The Bob Cupp/Thomas McBroom creation is oh-so pure, with a wooded front nine contrasted by an open, heathlands-style back nine.
