Mike Weir’s HOLIDAY GIFT PICKS

Mike Weir is a Canadian legend, the winner of eight PGA Tour events, and a PGA Tour Champions tournament. He takes us for a glimpse inside some of the gear he uses—clothing and clubs that you can put under the tree this year.

Mike Weir is a bit of a creature of habit. He likes his irons to perform a certain way, and demands precision from his wedges. The Canadian left-hander, the winner of eight PGA Tour events, is also careful about the way he presents himself on the course, wearing apparel that fits his personality.

In case you’re interested in emulating the Canadian golf legend—and potential Presidents Cup captain at Royal Montreal in 2024?—here’s a conversation with Weir about some of the key items he uses weekly at PGA Tour Champions events.

TaylorMade P790 Irons

For most of his career on the PGA Tour, Weir has played clubs manufactured by TaylorMade. That hasn’t changed now that he’s on PGA Tour Champions. In recent years he’d played TaylorMade’s P790 irons that offer a mix of distance and feel. The irons have been extremely popular and are now in their third generation.

“I had played the previous set of 790s for four years,” Weir says. “I didn’t find big distance gains with the new 790s, but my spin was better and I was able to get the ball in the air. I was getting a little bit more launch and a little bit more spin.”

Weir is also working with shaft maker KBS, and is considering a move to graphite shafts in the new year.

“I’m working with new shafts, including some graphite shafts, which take some of the wear and tear on my wrist and elbows,” he says. “I’ve used KBS shafts for a few years and I think graphite will take a little less work and a little easier on my body. I’m doing some experimenting.”

Vokey SM8 Wedges

Weir is a legend with a wedge in his hand, and continues to have one of the best shortgames on the planet. Because of that, he’s been very reluctant to move away from his Vokey wedges. Weir ran into Bob Vokey, a Canadian golf hall of fame member who creates the wedges, early in his career, and has been a fan of the irons ever since, carrying four Vokey SM8 wedges in his bag—a 60 bent to 59 degrees, a 54 bent to 53 degrees, along with a 50 degree gap wedge and a regular 45 degree wedge.

“I’ve pretty much used Vokey wedges my whole career,” he says. “If it isn’t broken, why try to change it? My short game was the hallmark of my game. I love the feel and softness, as well as the consistent flight. I’ve tried other brands and they’ve always launched a little higher. I think Vokeys have the right launch and the right amount of spin. And Voke is a great friend and always willing to work with me.”

The only change Weir makes is to alter the bounce, preferring a lob wedge with 8 degrees when he’s chipping in Florida Bermuda grass.

Hugo Boss

As a popular Britpop song once said, “It’s Hugo and it’s Boss.” Since joining PGA Tour Champions, Weir has worn clothes from Hugo Boss. The look works for Weir, a golfer who love a clean appearance on the course that’s never too sporty or too fashion-forward. Hugo Boss finds the sweet spot between the two, Weir says.

“For the size of guy I am, they fit me really well. I’ve always loved their style,” he says. “It isn’t like Nike or Adidas. It is athletic fitting, but a bit more traditional.”

Asher Gloves

That said, Weir does wear Asher golf gloves and hats. The unique golf brand likes to have fun with its gloves, offering everything from different colours to a skeleton print. Options abound, especially if you want to set yourself apart!
