Using artificial intelligence to fine-tune its irons, Callaway launches its MAVRIK line

With three versions—a standard, Pro and MAX version—Callaway says its MAVRIK irons are engineered in a way unlike anything the company has done previously.

“We’ve used artificial intelligence in our irons this time through,” says Steven Sourigno, Callaway’s California-based product manager who oversees the company’s line of woods and irons. “Every loft of every model is different and unique to that line.”

How does that work, exactly? Sourigno says that means the focus on long irons is to offer ball speed, while mid irons were created to offer the right balance of speed and accuracy. Shorter irons were designed specifically for scoring. AI was was also used to optimize the pattern of microspheres that offer the sound and feel of each of the three irons sets.

Callaway also announced today its MAVRIK metalwoods for 2020.

Here’s what you need to know about the new iron lineup, which is available now.

Artificial intelligence

AI was the big story for Callaway in 2019, and the company has extended its use into 2020, with the purchase on more computing power, and utilizing it in their MAVRIK iron line. MAVRIK Irons feature a new Flash Face Cup with AI to create a face architecture for every loft, an engineering feat Callaway says has never been undertaken previously. Hot spots and durability were a key for AI.

360 Cup Face

A technology that allows the face to flex on off-center strikes, this increases ball speed.

Tungsten Energy Core

Custom tungsten weights are used to optimize the launch and trajectory of every iron. That means Callaway was able to strengthen lofts on some irons while still maintaining the appropriate trajectory, spin rates and landing angles.

Microspheres

1-million microsphere are in each clubhead to improve the feel of every iron. The design, enhanced with AI, allowed Callaway to enhance the performance characteristics of each iron. That means long irons were designed for speed and launch, mid-irons for consistency, while short irons offer more spin and precision.

Who are they for?

MAVRIK

Designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of players with a mix of great ball speed, and consistent distance. Each iron is optimized using AI, offering great spin rates and trajectory.

Pro

The Pro model is more compact than Callaway’s Apex line, which is generally aimed at better golfers. The look is clean with a topline that will appeal to better golfers. Nope, it isn’t forged, but the sound and feel are going to surprise some people.

MAX

There’s an interesting twist on the MAVRIK MAX line. While generally aimed at higher-handicap golfers, the key isn’t just distance here. “A lot of golfers struggle to get the ball in the air,” says Callaway’s Sourigno. “And so with the MAX line, we’ve actually weakened the lofts to allow golfers to get the ball in the air more easily.”
