Titleist has historically targeted the better player, manufacturing equipment that prioritizes workability and exacting precision to deliver uncompromising performance. This year, Titleist has doubled-down on that promise with their TSi4 driver—an ultra-low spin option for increased distance aimed at the elite player or those who need significant spin reduction. Alternatively, if you’re like a third of the golfers who don’t swing it above 90 mph, Titleist hasn’t forgotten about you. The new TSi1 is a lightweight driver helping the rest of us squeeze the most out of our swings. Both TSi1 & TSi4 will be available online and in stores Friday, February 26.
Light-ning Fast TSi1
You don’t swing it particularly fast, and as a result, you need a club that optimizes what you’re working with. This is a common problem amateurs face, but not one without a solution. Titleist’s TSi1 line took a simple yet effective approach to remedy these distance shortfalls, developing a driver, along with fairway woods and hybrids, that are significantly lighter, promoting faster swing speeds for effortlessly longer drives.
TSi1 Driver—Lighter and Longer
Lighter equals faster—that’s nothing new. But surprisingly, it’s something few manufacturers have leveraged to generate more distance for those with slower swing speeds. With all the advances in multi-material construction, CG placement, and MOI returns, the straightforward approach to reducing club weight is perhaps the simplest solution for increasing overall distance off the tee. You wouldn’t haul a ski boat with a V4 engine to make it go faster, so why play heavier equipment in hopes of gaining speed? It just doesn’t add up. Nearly 40 grams lighter than comparable drivers, TSi1 has been trimmed down from head to grip, delivering truly effortless distance.
“For this audience, the moderate speed player, they are going to perform better with a lower overall club weight. Secondly, it has all of the attributes of the TSi2 and TSi3 in terms of material, aerodynamics, and all of the CG locations, but we’re doing it with a lighter weight head,” said Josh Tagle, Titliest’s Vice President of Golf Club Marketing.
In addition to being uncompromisingly lighter, TSi1 is engineered to facilitate a draw bias, which straightens wayward slices and contributes even further to overall distance gains. And just as with the rest of the TSi line, TSi1 utilizes Titleist’s renowned ATI 425 titanium face, the same material used for spacecraft construction and jet engines, so you know it’s good stuff.
Feathery Fairway Woods and Heavenly Hybrids
The TSi1 line also includes a host of fairway wood options, which again have been trimmed down to almost 50 grams lighter than comparable models. As with the TSi1 driver, the fairway woods and hybrids are about generating distance and optimizing swing efficiency. At a glance, you’ll notice TSi1 utilizes a flatter sole lie at address with a meatier overall profile, which in combination help launch the ball higher while providing generous forgiveness. Available in 3, 5, 7, and a customized 9-wood option for right-handed players, along with a standard 3 and 5-wood offering for lefties, TSi1 fairway woods are engineered as suitable alternatives to long irons.
Rounding out the lightweight division are TSi1 hybrids. In keeping with the target audience of slower swing speed players, Titleist has come out and developed a brand new look of hybrid, one that more closely resembles a fairway wood over that of a long iron crossover. With its ultra-low CG and gently rounded sole for improved turf interaction, TSi1 hybrids promise easy launching distance in a mid-spin setup. If you’re struggling with making consistent contact with your long irons and could use a little extra insurance in the way of clubhead size and forgiveness, then look no further.
“This is the perfect complement to the lightweight TSi drivers and fairways. It has a bigger sole, the highest MOI, and is the most forgiving of any hybrid we’ve ever made,” said Tagle.
As with TSi1 fairway woods, Titleist has expanded their loft offerings in their hybrids, available in a 20° to 29° for right-handed players, and 23° and 26° for lefties.
Are they for me?
The TSi1 line is focused on helping players maximize their horsepower by delivering a lighter lineup of woods and hybrids. If you’re often hitting first in your foursome and haven’t been able to muster that pop you once had, these lightweight options will surely assist.
TSi4 Driver—Incredibly Low-Spin
Some need as much of it as possible, others could use a lot less of it. Yes, we’re talking about driver spin. The TSi4 is dedicated to unparalleled spin reduction to increase distance for better players and help those who struggle with wayward slices mitigate their misses. By delivering an exceptionally low centre of gravity that is located forward toward the face, TSi4 produces an optimal combination of high launch with low spin.
First thing you’ll notice about TSi4 is its compact, classically-inspired clubhead, coming in at a mere 430cc. The vintage shape and smaller overall setup lends itself to better players who can forego the extra size and forgiveness, but Stephanie Luttrell, Titleist’s Director of Metalwood Development, doesn’t believe TSi4 is simply a “tour” option.
“The TSi4 is not strictly reserved towards high speed players, but absolutely dedicated towards all golfers who require spin reduction in order to improve their distance by producing a longer, more piercing ball flight.”
Adjustability made possible by Titleist’s SureFit hosel is also a key feature to TSi4, allowing for players to tinker with lie and loft angles, as well as adding or removing up to 8 grams of weight in the head. Low spin coupled with tailored weighting and launch angles enable players to dial in every aspect of the driver to optimal distance gains. In addition to its adjustability, compact shaping and low CG, Titleist has taken it a step further, generating an innovatively positioned vertical MOI for improved stability across the entire face at impact.
For the player who aims at the left rough to find a piece of the right fairway, TSi4 also delivers huge advantages. Whether you’re coming over the top and across the ball, resulting in that all-too-familiar drooping slice, or happen to strike it square but are looking for a more penetrating trajectory, Titleist’s latest driver provides a clean, efficient solution.
Is it for me?
This driver is all about spin. So, if spin isn’t something you’re struggling to control, you’re likely better suited to a more neutral driver, such as TSi2 or TSi3. Alternatively, if you’re a high swing speed player seeking more distance, or a chronic slicer of the ball, the TSi4 may just be the solution to getting you fairway bound.
