Should I play a draw-bias driver?

We’ve all been there—cutting across the ball from the outside, leaving the clubface open and watching the resulting shot slice away from the target and into trouble. Did you know a draw-bias driver will help alleviate some of that?

What causes my slice?

If your club’s path is from the outside to inside and the clubface is open to the direction the club is traveling at impact you will inevitably curve the ball in the form of a slice.

How can a draw-bias driver help my slice?

Draw-bias drivers are designed to provide you with the ability to square the face more to the path. This happens because the club’s center of gravity is placed closer to the shaft of the club, allowing the club’s closure rate to increase. This will make it easier to square the clubface at impact. This can help straighten out your slice or change it to a fade. Draw-bias drivers also result in making the club more forgiving and easier to launch the ball higher.

Is there a downside to draw-bias drivers?

Some instructors would prefer you learn to swing the club from the inside with a closed face to the path, which results in a draw, or at least learn to play a slight fade instead of a slice. Some golf coaches feel a draw-bias driver is a band-aid for a bigger problem. However, if you don’t have hours to hone your swing on the range a draw-bias driver might just help you find the short grass more often without pounding balls on the practice tee.

Draw-Bias Drivers to Consider

Here are some models which may help correct it.

TaylorMade SIM Max-D

The latest driver line from TaylorMade, the SIM Max-D is designed to help you cure your slice while providing a high launch off the tee.

PING G410 SFT

PING has really battled the slice in recent years, but few drivers do it better than the G410 SFT. SFT stands for “straight flight technology,” and that’s the goal—limiting the ball that cuts away from the fairway.

Callaway Mavrik MAX

Featuring two interchangeable weights MAX forgiveness or a MAX Draw configuration this driver is the best of both worlds. The MAX Draw setting of this driver is specifically designed created to increase the clubface closure rate which is a key to hitting the ball straighter.
