Odyssey’s New OWorks Red & Black

Odyssey’s new OWorks Red and Black putters were developed around the lessons learned from data and players on the PGA Tour, says Sean Toulon, general manager of the Odyssey line.

“The change is simple—you look at the math and everything is data driven in golf,” he says. “You can see there are putters that roll the ball better. If you’re not putting with something that has roll-enhancing technology, you’re losing out. We’re focusing all of Odyssey on that—get the ball rolling properly.”

With Odyssey’s Microhinge insert, and an increase in mallet-style heads, the company is putting up a compelling argument for the modern putter.

Models to Choose From

You’ll find toe hang and face-balanced mallets, which accounted for more than a quarter of all PGA Tour wins, in the lineup, using the S Neck, a short slant hosel.

Mallets

There’s a big push towards mallet-shaped putters in the lineup. Why? Toulon says it is simple: “The mallets are more forgiving. Even tour players know that. If we can give them a putter that is even fractionally better, and that make more five-footers—including one to win the Masters—it changes a player’s life. They just work better.”

Microhinge

A key Odyssey technology, Microhinge provides gains in topspin and improves roll at impact. Coupled with the company’s White Hot insert, the goal is to get the ball rolling properly immediately off the stroke, allowing golfers to make more putts.

What works for you?

You should fit the right putter to your stroke. Toulon adds that mallets are more forgiving, meaning you should make more putts even if you don’t catch the stroke in the middle of the face. Beyond that, consider whether colour is something you want to add to your bag. Toulon says interest in red putters was white hot last year. “Our players started looking at them and thought red looked cool,” he says. “We are using it to create excitement and our players are thrilled with them. About 60 percent are red and 40 percent are black.”

Odyssey’s 2-Ball EXO Putter

It is also worth checking out Odyssey’s 2-Ball EXO putter, among the most impressive Odyssey has ever brought to market. With a fully milled crown and sole, and a premium design based around Odyssey’s legendary 2-ball clubhead, as well as being extremely forgiving, the EXO 2-Ball is a sexy putter for those who want the best mix of design and detailing.
