Fast fairways are all the range in 2021

The fairway wood is often over looked during launch season as the main focus is all about the hot new driver the company was unleashing on the public. In recent years we’ve seen companies spend a lot of time refining their fairway woods. These aren’t afterthoughts—they are fairway-finding scoring machines.

Mizuno ST-Z Fairway Wood

Offering high levels of stability and low spin efficiency, the ST-Z fairway woods offer a throwback profile, with curves for the purist and performance for the pragmatist. Here for the third time is a revised MAS1C face that the company says is its most powerful to date. Offering low spin without lowering forgiveness, and offering adjustability of four degrees of loft (as well as altering the face angle), and a lightweight crown, the ST-Z finds the right mix between spin and MOI.

Mizuno has made terrific inroads in the woods segment of the market, and this continues the tradition and should grow the audience for clubs other than the manufacturer’s already noted irons.

Epic Max Fairway Wood and Epic Speed Fairway Wood

Callaway’s latest fairway woods, Epic Speed and Epic Max, offer significant improvements on previous models. Similar to the drivers from the same line, the fairway woods have a revamped Jailbreak system, but one with its own unique design. Instead of a Speed Frame, Epic fairway woods utilize what Callaway calls “A.I. Velocity Blades,” which is quite possibly the coolest name of any golf club tech feature.

Are they for you?

Callaway has really amplified interest in its fairway woods, and they’ve produced some great results in recent years. These are more of the same, offering outstanding speed and distance.

TaylorMade SIM2 Ti and SIM2 Max

In a world where results are measured in a few yards and how many fairways you find, TaylorMade has created a more forgiving fairway wood with better launch conditions. The company brought back its legendary V Steel from the original SIM fairways. But adjustments to the fairways allow for improved weight distribution and exacting center of gravity, offering more forgiveness and better launch properties. Twist Face is found in the fairways as well.

Are they for me?

SIM2 Ti is smaller and features a more tour-inspired head, while Max offers the confidence that comes with a larger clubhead and will be easier to get into the air for a majority of players.

Cobra RADSPEED Tour Fairway Wood and RADSPEED Big Tour Fairway Wood

2021 Cobra RadSpeed fairway woods – GolfWRX

The RADSPEED Fairway is COBRA’s standard model, equipped with front and back weighting for ideal balance, faster ball speeds, low spin and a high launch angle. Designed for optimal turf interaction, this model offers superior distance from a variety of lies and conditions. RADSPEED Fairway also utilizes a CNC Infinity Milled face, which extends beyond the toe and heel for a larger—some would say infinite—impact zone. RADSPEED also uses hollow split rails along the sole of the clubhead to generate greater face flex at impact. By hollowing out the rails, COBRA has managed to save nearly 11 grams, which provides discretionary weight to be strategically placed along the perimeter for performance optimization.

Are they for me?

RADSPEED TOUR and BIG TOUR are for experienced players who want a fairway wood that is long off the tee and easy to work into greens.

Srixon ZX Fairway Wood

Confidence-inspiring. That’s the goal of the ZX fairway from Srixon. Some fairway woods are easy to hit from the tee, while others work better from the fairway. Srixon says the ZX offers players confidence in either location, and features a Cannon Sole for an optimal center of gravity as well as increased ball speed. This is a club designed to attack par-5s, or put you in a great spot to deal with a tight tee shot.

Is it for me?

Trying to find a fairway wood that works from the tee and the fairway? That’s the goal of ZX, and suggests you should test these in both areas this summer.

PING G425 LST Fairway Wood and G425 Max Fairway Wood

The hook for this year’s PING fairways is something the company calls “Spinsistency.” Yep, that means mixing spin and consistency. It turns out fairway woods would often spin very differently depending on where the ball struck the face. The goal of the new technology is to normalize spin. The drivers are found in three versions—the main G425 model, as well as a low-spin model (LST) and anti-slice model (SFT).

Are they for me?

PING makes great fairway woods that are very forgiving and inspire confidence in the golfer. With three options depending on your swing, you’ll find one that suits your game.
