Lightweight and fast, as well as forgiving—that’s Cobra’s new F-MAX AIRSPEED, the latest iron and driver in the F-MAX family, which hits stores this January.
Throughout golf there’s a movement afoot to assist players with slower swing speeds through the use of lighter clubs that offer a ton of forgiveness. It isn’t an easy objective—engineers spend a lot of effort finding ways to shave off grams of weight from each iron, which is exactly what Cobra’s done with F-MAX AIRSPEED. With a deep undercut cavity and low-profile shape, the F-MAX is the ideal club for the golfer with a moderate swing speed.
“For golfers who love the game but just don’t swing it with the same speed they used to, the F-MAX AIRSPEED irons are a great choice,” said Tom Olsavsky, vice-president of research and development for Cobra. “We are confident that the combination of easy launch, low spin, and increased clubhead speed that these irons provide, will make the game much more enjoyable.”
Driver
Once again, the focus is on lightweight—for both men and women. The goal is to help the golfer generate more swing speed and therefore more distance. Cobra reworked the F-MAX AIRSPEED driver, with a new carbon fiber crown that saves 10 grams of weight, which engineers pushed low and back, making the driver more forgiving and easier to get in the air. Overall, the driver is 285 grams, almost 5% lighter than previous models. Everything was considered to reduce the weight—right down to a clearcoat on the shaft.
Carbon Fiber Crown
This replaces titanium and saves weight, but still maintains the club’s stability.
Lighter shaft
The shaft is six grams lighter than the previous generation, and the Lamkin grip reduces the weight by 11 more grams, bringing the club down 13 grams overall. In golf terms, that’s a massive weight savings.
PWR Ridge
Smooth aerodynamics make it easier to swing the club faster—which is the goal of F-MAX AIRSPEED. PWR Ridge, coupled with the offset hosel, make it easier for golfers with moderate swing speeds to get the ball in the air and hit it straight. There is also a version without the offset.
Irons
The COBRA Golf F-MAX AIRSPEED irons are available in a variety of set options for both men and women and include these stroke-saving features:
Shaft
Each shaft in the set is five grams lighter than previous models. It doesn’t sound like much, but in golf engineering terms, it is significant. Cobra used a midsize grip to improve feel and control.
Weighting
Cobra weighted THE F-MAX AIRSPEED towards the heel, making the clubs easier to turn over for slicers of the ball.
Hosel design
Shorter hosels in the long irons make it easier for golfers to launch them higher, but the hosels change for shorter clubs, allowing for more control and flatter approaches.
Progressive offset
Common in most game improvement sets, progressive offset allows the scoring irons to have less offset, offering more control.
Lofts
Greater iron lofts maximize flight trajectory for those with slower swing speeds. Higher shots equals increased carry distances for most golfers, and improves the angle the ball comes into the green. If a company simply increases the loft on irons, the angle of approach will diminish, making it hard for golfers to hold the green, something Cobra sought to avoid.
Aesthetics
A nickel, two-tone chrome finish makes the clubs really pop.
Who are they for?
Cobra’s F-MAX AIRSPEED is aimed at the mid to high-handicap golfer seeking to gain distance, while still have the ability to square the clubface. Fight a slice? Finding you don’t hit the ball as far or as high as you used to? Than F-MAX AIRSPEED could be the right fit.
Cobra F-MAX AIRSPEED drivers, fairway woods, irons and hybrids will be available January 10 as stand-alone products or a complete 13-piece set.
