How to get the most out of those long summer days

Each year on the Summer Solstice (June 21)—or the longest day of the year—is an important consideration for Canadian golfers. After all, we spend much of our year with shortened days and snow, so the ability to get out and play golf for almost 16 hours of daylight shouldn’t be taken for granted. While places like the fabled Bandon Dunes resort in Oregon host events that allow golfers to play four rounds on the solstice, there are plenty of great ways to take advantage of the longest day of the year if you’re in Canada.

Head out early

Are you a dewsweeper, the kind of golfer who likes to hit the course with the grass still wet and the sun on the rise? You can readily hit the course for 6 am, and if you’re quick, you might even be finished and ready to head to work for 9. How many days can you pull that off? And your colleagues will surely be jealous when you tell them you’ve already got a game in—and the work day hasn’t even started.

Play 36 … or more

As we mentioned, on the solstice in Oregon, Bandon Dunes golfers often play 72 holes of golf. Now you might not be prepared to sneak in four rounds of golf—or deal with the ensuing sore muscles the next day—but there’s no reason you can’t make the Summer Solstice a day when you get 36 holes in. Few golfers ever manage to get two rounds in over a day, but with more than 15 hours of daylight, you could play a morning round, have a long lunch and sneak in another 18 in the afternoon.

Hit the course after work

The evening, when the sun cools and the winds drop, is often the best time of day to play golf. But sometimes it can be hard to get 18 in before the sun goes down. Not on the Summer Solstice. With sunset at well past nine, you have the opportunity to grab your clubs, throw them over your shoulder, and head out at 6 pm with the chance to get a full round in. The benefits? Fewer golfers, faster play and cooler conditions. What more can you ask for?
