When Covid hit in 2020, professional golfers in Ontario needed a place to come out and play.
Enter the Toronto Players Tour.
Golf Town hopped on board as a title sponsor this year and the partnership has blossomed.
“Golf Town has stepped in this year to really help our players out. They understood there was a need in the Ontario golf community to help these players out. And the players have responded amazingly to it. Being the first year for the Golf Town Cup, there’s a lot of prestige that goes with it and we look forward to building on it in the coming years.” – Russell Budd, TPT Owner, Tournament Director
Budd – who played in the 2018 RBC Canadian Open and is a veteran of the PGA Latino America Mackenzie Tours – wanted the TPT to be different than other mini tours. And it is. Anyone can play. That’s right. Even if you shoot a hundred, you can tee it up with the pros.
“The pros get some of the highest level competition that they could play in Canada, in some of the best facilities. While the every day player or club guys get to compare apples to apples with the pros from across Canada and the United States.” – Russell Budd, TPT Owner, Tournament Director
The final event of the season was the Mike Doyle Tour Championship held at Cobble Beach near Owen Sound. The tournament was won by Austin Ryan … but the overall season champion was Brendan Leonard of Cambridge whose points lead was insurmountable. Leonard wins, not only a great looking trophy, but partial exemption status for the Mackenzie Tour next year.
“It’s awesome, said Brendan Leonard, Golf Town Cup Winner.” “It’s great to be the inaugural champ. It was a really great season and I couldn’t thank Golf Town enough for putting together a season we didn’t think we were gonna be able to play.”
