Webb Simpson wins PLAYERS Championship

It wasn’t exactly a final round filled with drama, but former U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson returned to the winner’s circle for the first time in five years.

Simpson, who won the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco, entered the round with a seven-shot lead. Often playing with a big lead is a challenge, and Simpson admitted it was more difficult than he anticipated, especially with the roars for a certain former No. 1 golfer in the world being heard throughout the Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass.

“It was harder than I thought,” Simpson said. “I would have loved to have gotten off to a little better start. I was 1-under through 7, feeling pretty good with 9 coming up and 11, but dropped a shot at 8, and there’s so much noise in front of us with Tiger, and you wonder what everybody is doing. I felt like that middle part of the round was big.”

His win came on Mother’s Day, and Simpson was quick to thank his mom for the help she provided on his way to becoming a professional golfer.

“My mom was taking me to tournaments when [my dad] couldn’t,” Simpson said. “She was cheering for me. If I shot 80, she was proud of it. So, I always felt unconditional love and support from my mom no matter how I played. She just wanted me to enjoy the game, and she didn’t get wrapped up in the results and my junior rank and all that. I always felt the freedom when my mom was around just to play golf.”

While Simpson was running away with the tournament, eventually winning by four, there were other storylines that captured the imagination:

There’s a new No. 1

Justin Thomas, who finished in a tie for 11th, ascended to the No. 1 player in the World Golf Rankings.

“It means a lot, but it’s something I want to have for a long time,” Thomas said. “It’s not something I just want to have once … like [Dustin Johnson] has and like Tiger did and other guys who have had it for a long time. That’s more of a goal of mine as opposed to just having it.” Johnson was the the No. 1 player for the past 64 weeks.

Tiger’s highs and lows

Tiger Woods dunked one in the water on the 17th on Sunday en route to a double bogey and a tie for 11th-place. The Big Cat excited everyone with four birdies on the front nine, but couldn’t keep the pedal down on the back.

“I didn’t play particularly well in the first couple days, but I turned it around this weekend and I got it rolling,” said Woods, who finished Sunday with a 3-under par 69 and 11-under for the week. “I hit the ball well, I controlled it and I made some putts. I knew my putting was right around the corner, I knew I was close because I hit good putts that just didn’t go in. It was just a matter of time, and this weekend was it.”

Canadians in the field

Canadian Mackenzie Hughes got the thrill of playing—and well—with Tiger Woods on Saturday, but couldn’t keep it up on Sunday. He and fellow Canadian Adam Hadwin shot 1-over and both finished in a tie for 57th.

    Pedal, not peddle.
