As we approach The Evian Championship—the final major championship on the LPGA Tour schedule—Golf Town Athlete Brooke Henderson is a certain favourite. Coming off her dominant win at the CP Women’s Open, Brooke is showing that she is at the top of her game and in prime position to pick up her second major championship victory.
Brooke’s triumph as the CP Women’s Open was a major moment for golf in Canada. She became the first Canadian woman to win the national championship since Jocelyne Bourassa in 1973. And with no Canadian winners of the men’s Canadian Open since the early 50s, Brooke’s four-shot victory was certainly historic. The Smiths Falls, Ont. native also proved that she could once-again hold her own under pressure, after giving away final-round leads on three occasions earlier this season, most notably at the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship. Without a doubt, the commanding victory will have provided a much-needed confidence boost heading into the season’s final major. Brooke’s fine play continued last week at the Cambia Portland Classic, a tournament she’d won twice previously, where she finished T21.
The Evian Championship goes ahead next week from Évian-les-Bains, France, and is a crucial event in deciding the season-long race to the CME Globe. Brooke currently sits in third place in the points race, which awards $1-million to the eventual champion. The Canadian has had mixed success in the tournament in the past—her three previous appearances have resulted in finishes of T58 (2017), T9 (2016), and T25 (2015). But with her game is seemingly firing on all cylinders as of late, Brooke will almost certainly contend come Sunday.
