Tiger Woods tees it up at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club

The PGA Tours’ second major of 2022 will crown a new champion this week and see the return of Tiger battle a tough field for the Wanamaker Trophy.

The year’s second major championship takes place this week at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma where 156-players will tee it up with hopes of hoisting the Wannamaker Trophy, however all eyes will be on Tiger Woods as he makes his second start of 2022 after his long awaited return that came at The Masters in April.

Woods, who has won four career PGA Championships (including the 2007 edition at Southern Hills) is making his first start since last month’s Masters and just his second start since suffering injuries in a February 2021 car accident in California.

For the seventh time in its history, Southern Hills will play host to a major championship. However, this year’s PGA Championship will be the first since Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner renovated this venerable Tulsa, Okla., track. Hanse and Wagner thinned trees throughout the course, made the fairways wider, rehabilitated the stream system that meanders through the property and reshaped bunkers to better reflect what Perry Maxwell originally built in 1936. The biggest change however was removing the rough from the edges of the greens, which will allow balls to run away from the raised putting surfaces when players miss their approach shots. At more than 7,500 yards and a par of 70, Southern Hills is consistently ranked inside the top 100 courses in the world.

The Contenders

While we’ve discussed Woods  as the biggest draw this week in Tulsa, he isn’t one of the favourites to win the Wannamaker. The field includes 17 past PGA champions and 34 major winners, including currently world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler who is on an absolute heater in 2022 with wins at The Masters, WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and the WM Phoenix Open.

The 25-year-old from Dallas is also said to have torched Southern Hills on a recent scouting trip. World No. 2 Jon Rahm looks to continue his run of impressive play at Southern Hills and will certainly be a factor for the week, as will Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Cam Smith and Rory McIlory. Also keep an eye on the three Canadians in the field—Corey Conners, Adam Hadwin and Mackenzie Hughes—to make noise.
