It was back in August when Tiger Woods announced the match that everyone was waiting for: A head-to-head winner-takes-all $9-million pay-per-view TV battle with long-time rival Phil Mickelson.

There’s no one in professional golf who likes a good wager more than Phil Mickelson. His bets—on and off the course—are legendary. He’s made a 25-to-1 bet with Mike Weir sitting in the locker room at the WGC in 2001, and made a $2,500 bet with then teenager Ryan Ruffels on the first tee during a practice round. He also allegedly has won tens of thousands betting on the Super Bowl and World Series. Another story that came out of a court case had Mickelson paying $2-million to cover a gambling loss.
The point is Phil likes to gamble—and that’s sure to make The Match entertaining.
The Odds: Currently Vegas oddsmakers favour Tiger at -215. That means if you put $215 down on Woods, you’d get a return of $100.
Details: Details of the Woods/Mickelson match have been few and far between, other than they are playing for a $9-million, winner-takes-all purse. But Mickelson, whose been doing the media circuit promoting the event, has suggested the wager doesn’t end there. Nope. Expect side bets—up and down out of a bunker, or money down on who holes a specific putt—as implied in the press release for the event. There’s also speculation the money from the side bets will go to charity and could also include long driver, closest to the pins and other on-course challenges.
