THE RIGHT FIT – ON THE RANGE WITH MIKE WEIR

As the official custom club fitter of Mike Weir, it was a privilege to work with the 2003 Masters Champ and Golf Town Ambassador ahead of the RBC Canadian Open. The process began a week earlier at the newest StudioX location in our North Calgary store. We spent a few hours with Mike in the simulator, testing out a few driver and fairway options. Check out the video here.

Here’s a look behind the ropes during tournament week as I got him dialed in.

Monday June 2nd

After arriving on the range at TPC Toronto, we decided the main focus of the session would be a deeper dive into the specs of his fairways and hybrids. Some tweaks were needed as he readied for a record-tying 32nd Canadian Open.

After warming up with some wedges, we tackled the top end of the bag – with an emphasis on avoiding distance redundancies between the hybrids and fairway woods. To establish a baseline, we measured the carry distance of his 5-iron. From there, we tested the Cobra King Tec 3 and 4 hybrids. While both performed well, it soon became clear the 3-hybrid and 5-wood were flying nearly identical distances. Despite some tweaking, we couldn’t create enough separation to justify keeping both. So long, 3-hybrid.

After testing a variety of shafts from Graphite Design and Mitsubishi, we learned his current fairway shaft performed the best. We settled on the Titleist GT3 3-wood and 5-wood, paired with the Fujikura Ventus Blue TR shafts.

Next up, driver testing. At last week’s fitting, we landed on the Cobra DS Adapt X and the Ping G440 LST. On the range, both showed solid gains in launch and carry. The Ping offered a higher ball flight, while the Cobra gave us a slightly lower trajectory – useful for managing wind.

With the course playing as a par 70 (modified from 72 by converting two par-5s into long par-4s at nearly 500 yards), distance off the tee is crucial. With both drivers performing well, we opted to keep BOTH in the bag for now – Cobra for lower, wind-piercing drives, and Ping for high-launch when the wind is favorable. Each is paired to a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue shaft.

Mike was briefly called away for media duties, so I took the opportunity to regrip a few of his clubs. It was a tight turnaround, but everything was ready before the Pro-Am shotgun start.

On course, the goal was to finalize the top-end setup to give Mike the best chance to score. With the course playing longer, a premium is on the long irons, hybrids, and fairway woods. In fact, Mike didn’t hit a single full wedge shot under 100 yards. That insight made it easy to pull the 50° wedge from the bag, leaving him with a PW, 54°, and 60° setup and freed up space to carry both drivers.

Watching him navigate the course was like shadowing a caddie. We discussed strategy, sightlines, and target areas. As a left-handed golfer myself, it was valuable to observe how Mike managed his shots to match the contours of the course. Straight shots were rare as most were shaped to access pins or fairways strategically.

We ended the day with a quick debrief to finalize the bag setup.

Today was our final chance to check our settings before the start of the tournament. One side of the range was into the wind and the other side was downwind. That allowed Mike to test his drivers and fairways in the various conditions he’ll likely face. It was very satisfying to see the numbers we saw in the fitting bay, confirmed outdoors.

Shortly after the range session, it was time for Mike to tee it up in another Pro-Am after which, he returned to the practice area and put in some more work out of the bunkers and on the putting green.

From a personal standpoint, it was an absolute privilege to work alongside such a dedicated professional like Mike, whose attention to detail is hugely impressive. Up close, you quickly begin to understand the commitment and mental strength it takes to play golf at the highest level.

This entire process emphasized the importance of getting properly fit at Golf Town, no matter your playing ability. Small changes can make big difference to your game and allow you to enjoy golf more.

And in the end, whether you’re on tour playing for a National Championship or just out with your buddies, isn’t that what it’s all about?
