What: The first PGA Tour event of 2018 featuring champions from 2017.
Where: The Planatation Course at Kapalua (designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw).
When: January 4-7.
The Scoop: PGA Tour golf returns to Hawaii just after New Year’s for the recently rebranded Sentry Tournament of Champions, with Sentry replacing sponsors Hyundai and SBS this year. The tournament will see many of golf’s biggest names in the field—including Masters winner Sergio Garcia, World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, FedEx Cup and PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas. The lone Canadian representative will be Abbotsford, BC native Adam Hadwin, who had a breakout year, winning for the first time last year and shooting 59. Check out the field here.
Who to watch: You’ve got to like the chances of the big hitters at Kapalua, a wide golf course with a lot of shifts in elevation. With that in mind, keep your eyes on U.S. Open winner Brooks Koepka, as well as Johnson, a past champion. But it isn’t just the bombers who play Kapalua well; Jordan Spieth is a past winner in Hawaii, and with his slick short game and strong putting, the Texan is a perennial favourite at the tournament.
