Rory McIIroy is coming to the RBC Open – for the first time

And if that doesn’t capture your attention, country superstars Florida Georgia Line and Canadian rockers Glorious Sons are going to be there as well.

Golf Canada has announced that McIlroy, the No. 4 player in the world who is also coming off a win at the Players Championship last week, will be coming to Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ancaster for the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy has not previously played in the tournament, which used to be held the week after the British Open. The tournament is now being held in June in the week ahead of the U.S. Open, which is a key reason he’ll be attending. Earlier this year McIlroy said he was planning on playing the week before major championships.

“I’m really excited to play in my first RBC Canadian Open,” said McIlroy in a press release. “There continues to be a lot of momentum around this historic tournament, with a new date, new location and now a new concert series. I’ve had the opportunity to see the passion that Canada has for our sport and I look forward to seeing the energy of Canadian golf fans first hand. I’m also looking forward to squaring off with DJ, Adam and the rest of Team RBC for Canada’s National Open Championship.”

The press release also announced members of “Team RBC” are expected to be at the tournament. That includes World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, the tournament’s defending champion, Players Championship runner-up Jim Furyk, 2016 RBC Canadian Open winner Brandt Snedeker, and top-ranked Canadian Adam Hadwin.

McIlroy is a four-time major champion, and 15-time winner on the PGA Tour, as well as a three-time champion of the Race to Dubai. He held the world No. 1 ranking for 95 weeks over his career, and is one of the game’s most significant stars.

Sources say the tournament can expect more stars to be in attendance. Jordan Spieth, who has struggled this year, often plays the week ahead of major championships, and it is quite possible Brooks Koepka, who played in Canada last year, will come to Hamilton as well.

The news of McIlroy playing came on the heels of the announcement of a concert series to coincide with the tournament. Those purchasing tickets for the tournament can see country stars Florida Georgia Line and Juno winners Glorious Sons as part of the concert series, which will take place on June 7 and 8.

“We’ve always had an epic time performing in Canada,” says Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard. “Our Canadian fans sure know how to bring the party!”
