Return to the King’s Place

Few tournaments evoke the spirit of golf quite like the Arnold Palmer Invitational. A perennial stop for the game’s elite, Bay Hill has a tendency to deliver electrifying golf in an environment that’s as much about the competition as it is commemorating Palmer’s legacy. In addition to acknowledging The King’s indelible mark on the game, the API also kicks off the Tour’s Florida swing, the unofficial lead up to The Masters. The event’s selective field and hefty purse give players a chance to assess their games as they head into the bulk of the season. So pour an Arnold Palmer and put on your red cardigan, here’s what you need to know about the tournament.

The Venue

Arnold Palmer bought the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando in 1974, and the property’s hosted the tournament since 1979 under Palmer’s leadership. The par-72 course tips out at 7,454 yards and offers a classic layout with four par-3s and four par-5s. Historically, the golf course has been gettable, with winning scores typically in the double-digits under par, but much depends on wind conditions and green speeds, both of which can significantly increase its difficulty. Conditions were firm and fast last year, leading to Tyrell Hatton winning the event at four-under par, the highest winning score in tournament history.

Who’s in the Field?

As it stands, eight of the top 20 players in the world have committed to the event, with Rory McIlroy and Tyrell Hatton arriving as the top-ranked contenders. However, the tournament’s field isn’t quite what it used to be, with a lot of blame leveled against the Tour’s scheduling adjustments in recent years, which sandwiched the event between the WGC-WorkDay Championship and The Players. Nonetheless, the tournament’s celebrated pedigree remains intact. Unlike regular events that provide winners a two-year exemption on Tour, The Arnold Palmer Invitational grants a special three-year pass—a nod to the tournament’s elevated status.

Favourites?

Rory McIlroy should be high on your list of potential winners. The Northern Irishman won the event in 2018 by three shots and will have his game trending as he preps for Augusta. Not to mention, the subtle right-to-left doglegs at Bay Hill suit his draw off the tee. Another favourite worth paying attention to is Matthew Fitzpatrick. The young Englishman notched a top-10 last year and more recently finished T-5 at the Genesis Invitational. And of course, who can discount Patrick Reed, a player who’s always finding new ways to win.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational will run from March 4-7 with fans in attendance during competitive rounds at 25% capacity.
