Rory McIlroy.
DJ and Brooks.
Florida Georgia Line.
And one of the best golf courses in Canada.
That’s what you’re going to find at this year’s RBC Canadian Open.
It all adds up to a buzz around the tournament unlike any we’ve seen in recent years.
New date, great course
In recent years the Canadian Open has sat directly after the British Open, making the tournament a challenge to build into a schedule for many players. That’s changed this year, with the tournament moving to early June (the first round is June 6) ahead of the U.S. Open. The move is generally viewed as a positive step, as many of the PGA Tour’s best simply won’t play the week after the British Open, but would use the Canadian Open as a warm-up before heading to California for the U.S. Open.
Regardless, the tournament is being held at one of the country’s grand old courses—Hamilton Golf and Country Club, which is actually in Ancaster, Ont. Built by H.S. Colt, the course is perennially in SCOREGolf’s Top 10 courses in Canada. With valleys that have to be navigated throughout the front nine, and more open space on the back nine, Hamilton is an Old School thrill ride.
Great Players
The buzz this year seems to be revolving around Rory McIlroy, who is making his first appearance at the RBC Canadian Open. He’s playing some of his best golf, and was hotly tipped heading into the Masters. Currently the fourth-ranked player in the world, McIlroy won the PLAYERS and said he wants his game sharp heading into the U.S. Open: “June was looking like it was going to be sort of quiet for me, so I wanted to play a bit,” McIlroy said during a call for the Canadian Open tournament preview in Hamilton recently. “One of my goals this year was to play more and to be more competitive and that’s really what it’s down to. Part of the reason I wanted to play was that I wanted to play my way into the U.S. Open the following week.”
McIlroy isn’t alone—the field is deep this year, and includes World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, and No. 3 Brooks Koepka. That’s enough to get anyone excited.
Great Music
Over a decade ago, the Canadian Open tried to bring music into the fold, having Hollywood actor Kevin Costner join for a pro-am and play with his band at night. Well, the RBC Canadian Open has stepped up its game, tapping bro country superstars Florida Georgia Line for a sold-out show on Friday night, and Canadian alt-rockers Glorious Sons on Saturday. The shows will be held on the third nine at Hamilton G&CC, meaning you won’t even have to leave the property to enjoy some sweet sounds.
