Pool noodles and no caddies—golf set to return at Seminole for TaylorMade match on Sunday

There won’t be any caddies and there could be pool noodles in the cups. But the world’s best will still show up on Sunday to play an exhibition match that will see World No. 1 Rory McIlroy, Matthew Wolff, Dustin Johnson, and Rickie Fowler battle on one of the world’s most fabled courses.

But the spectre of Covid-19 is still looming over the match, as Dustin Johnson acknowledged on a conference call.

“I think we have a big responsibility on ourselves to make sure that we practice all the guidelines that the PGA Tour is going to set in place,” Johnson said. “Everyone is going to be watching what we’re doing, so it’s very important for us to do it all correctly. We have a responsibility to ourselves and all the other players to stay safe and stay healthy.”

Caddies won’t be part of the match, the PGA Tour has announced. That means we’ll witness something you never see on the PGA Tour—golfers carrying their own bags as they walk around the (largely) flat Seminole, a seaside course in eastern Florida.

“That’s not an issue,” Johnson said. “I feel like I’m in good enough shape to carry my bag around for 18 holes without it being a problem.”

One question that came out of the conference call was whether there would be exemptions that would permit Johnson, McIlroy, Wolff and Fowler to warm up on the range, and whether a pool noodle would replace the cup.

“We want the player to be able to putt without the flagstick in the hole and we want the noodle to be removed,” said PGA Tour Senior Referee Stephen Cox. “These are the sort of things that we’re still waiting to get confirmation on. And if it turns out that we’re not comfortable going down that road, then we’ll just proceed with the noodle in the hole, and that will give an opportunity to show that golf at the highest level can be played in a fun manner. But it is our intention to play golf just like we will do at Colonial in a few weeks’ time.”

Given they’ve been away from the game for a couple of months, and the Masters was postponed until later in the year, it shouldn’t be shocking the golfers are anxious to get back to competition.

“I can’t wait for it. I’m so excited. The fact that I have Dustin Johnson as a partner, that eases my little bit of anxiety a bit—the fact that I have someone like that alongside me. But as you said, we’re playing against—two of the best players in the world, very explosive and can make a lot of birdies.”

Will the time away make a difference? McIlroy said the lack of competitive golf will certainly show.

“I think we will all be feeling it a little bit, especially with the cameras around,” he said. “Just for the competition and for the competitiveness and hopefully the little bit of back and forth that we’re going to have on the course, I’m excited for that part of it, as well, for sure.”
