Golf Town Athlete Brooke Henderson signed every autograph, smiled for photos, and continued to stay firmly in the mix for some big year-end awards until the final putt dropped at the CME Group Tour Championship – the final event of the 2022 LPGA Tour season.
Although she won’t be heading home with all the hardware (Lydia Ko won the season-finale by two shots and captured the money title, Race to CME Globe, and Rolex Player of the Year honour in the process), Brooke’s 2022 campaign was one of her most consistent and was filled with plenty of good cheer.
Brooke ended up tied for 7th at the Tour Championship, her 10th top-10 result of the year. Brooke’s season was so steady, in fact, she only finished outside the top 20 – in events where she played all four rounds – just twice. She also added a runner-up result at a Ladies European Tour event this fall to her list of accomplishments this season.
“2022 was really good to me,” said Brooke at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida. “It was a nice bounce back from my year last year. It wasn’t my best year, so I really wanted to come out strong, which I did. I had a bunch of top 10s early in the season, and then to get those two wins in the middle section felt really nice.”
Brooke captured the ShopRite LPGA Classic after firing a blistering 7-under 64 in the final round (ironically her win happened the same day as the final round of the RBC Canadian Open). She topped Lindsey Weaver-Wright in a playoff for her first win in over a year.
A month later Brooke won the Amundi Evian Championship, her second-career major championship title, after rolling in a birdie on the 72nd hole.
She had a fabulous year at the major championships, with finishes of T13-T15-T16-1-T7. Brooke proved that when it came to playing on the biggest stages, she was ready to go!
“I was very disappointed with 2021 and coming into this year I really wanted to bounce back and have a solid year, and I got off to a really hot start. I had a bunch of top 10s in the first few months,” said Brooke. “Then to have that stretch in the middle of the summer there where I had two wins and a bunch of top 10s and some other great finishes, it really made me feel awesome and… just like the hard work was paying off.
“To have a bounce-back year like this was really exciting for me.”
Brooke had to withdraw from the penultimate event of the season, the Pelican Women’s Championship due to an upper-back injury. She did not play or practice through the weekend prior to the final event of the year or Monday. Tuesday she hit only irons. She played the pro-am on Wednesday – and rode in the cart – but grinded it out to a 4-under 68 in the first round. She struggled Friday before bouncing back with a fabulous 7-under 65 in the third round. She shot an even-par 72 in her final event of the year – including a birdie on her final hole of the season.
“I feel like maybe, the hockey mentality, just trying to be tough. It’s the final event of the year and I just really wanted to finish this year on a strong note,” said Brooke of how she was able to push through the pain for the season finale. “I know that I have a month and a half to rest and recover and do everything I need to be ready for next year, so, just pushing through.”
Brooke ended her 2022 season with perhaps the most complete effort of any of her LPGA Tour seasons.
She ended up fourth on the LPGA Tour in Scoring Average (69.5!), second in Strokes Gained: Total, fifth in Greens in Regulation and in the top five of plenty of other year-end categories including money-earned and top-10 finishes. She also ended up third in the Rolex Player of the Year race.
Brooke was also the unofficial host of the CP Women’s Open when it returned in August. The event was named the ‘Tournament of the Year’ at the LPGA Tour’s year-end partner meeting, and she couldn’t have been more excited to have the opportunity to play in front of so many of her fans in Ottawa.
The Brooke Brigade had a great time cheering on Brooke Henderson in 2022, and we can’t wait for even more excitement to come next year!
As a Canadian and a golfer, we are very fortunate to have Brooke represent our country and the game of golf with so much class. I have followed her since she started at the age of 17 on the tour and was a fan of hers because of her personality and tenacity she displayed when playing. Her career has blossomed over the years and only look forward to hopefully many more accomplishments in her golf and personal life.
And a big shout out to her sister Brittany who is also responsible for many of Brooks accomplishments having her on the bag is definitely a plus and both make a hell of a team
Wishing you both happy holidays and an excellent season for 2023 and only joy in your personal lives
