The fourth majors on the PGA TOUR Champions announced at its media day that Kaulig Companies will be the new title sponsor of the Senior Players Championship at Firestone Country Club beginning in 2023.
The 2022 Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship continues the tradition of professional golf tournaments at Firestone Country Club and see a loaded field battle for an increaded purse of $3-million USD and entry into the following season’s Players Championship on the PGA Tour.
The Contenders
Mike Weir looks to bpounce back after a tough outing during the U.S. Senior Open at Saucan Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania. At last year’s Seniors Players Championship, Weir finished T20, 15-shots back of the winner Steve Stricker. A past winner at Firestone Country Club, Justin Leonard will make his PGA TOUR Champions debut and will likely be a player to watch.
Stricker will look to defend his title from a year ago but will face still competition from the likes of U.S. Senior Open winner Padraig Harrington, perennial favourite Bernhard Langer and PGA TOUR Champions rookie David Duval and Canadian Stephen Ames.
The Venue
The South Course at Firestone Country Club was once referred to as a “monster” by the legendary Arnold Palmer. And at length of more than 7,400 and a par 70, it’s easy to understand why Arnie gave it such a nickname. The course previously hosted the PGA TOUR’s WGC – Bridgestone Invitational from 2006-2012 (which saw Tiger Woods four times).
Originally opened for play in 1920, the course saw a major redesign by famed architect Robert Trent Jones in 1960. In addition to the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational events, Firestone has hosted three PGA Championships over the years and will be host to the Seniors Players Championship thru 2026.
