In an announcement that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, Canadian golf legend Mike Weir was announced as the captain of the International Team at the 2024 Presidents Cup being held at Royal Montreal.
Weir was in Montreal for a Montreal Canadiens game earlier, and the announcement for the Presidents Cup was made at the Bell Centre, where the NHL team plays.

“Presidents Cup has become such a big part of my career, so to be here in this moment announced as captain of the 2024 International Team is surreal,” said Weir. “Now as I look with anticipation toward 2024, I couldn’t be more excited to lead the International Team into my home country of Canada for what will surely be the experience of a lifetime.”
Weir played in five Presidents Cups, and worked as an assistant captain at three others. Weir played in 24 Presidents Cup matches, and scored 14 points. His 3-1-1 record in singles, and 7-2-0 record in fourball matches demonstrates just how successful he was in the team competition, despite the fact his International Team has struggled. Weir, who won eight times on the PGA Tour, and once on PGA Tour Champions, has an overall 13-9-2 record in the Presidents Cup.
During that period, the U.S. team won nine Presidents Cups in a row, while the International team has won once in the history of the event.
That said, Weir has contributed to some highlights, including his famed win against Tiger Woods in the Sunday singles in 2007. In his match with Woods, Weir hit 7-iron into the 18th green, and the Canadian took down the best player in golf at the time.
“When I look back, I have so many incredible memories associated with this event whether it be my debut in 2000, [or] winning my singles match against Tiger in 2007 at Royal Montreal,” Weir said.
There could well be a strong Canadian contingent at the 2024 event. In this year’s event, played at Quail Hollow with the International Team captained by Trevor Immelman, saw Canadians Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith play in a losing effort. In past years, Adam Hadwin and Graham DeLaet played in the event. “We are hopeful to have a few Canadians on the team that will help muster up some of the loudest roars the event has ever heard,” Weir said.
Overall, he called the appointment as captain a “new piece of history in my career.”
“I have such a deep sense of pride bringing the team home knowing that in my opinion, the people of Canada are the most loyal and passionate sports fans in the world.” He said.
Mike Weir is a very deserving captain for the 2024 Presidents Cup. His win in 2007 over Tiger Woods at the Presidents Cup is a triumph that not many golfers can claim. Best Holiday Wishes to you and yours. From Your Ontario Fan
