Manulife LPGA Classic Brings the Women’s Tour Back to Canada

It’s been an exciting year on the LPGA Tour so far.  Every tournament this season has seen a different golfer come out on top.  This past weekend was no exception as In-Kyung Kim came back from injury and held on to win her first event this year, thwarting Anna Nordqvist’s attempt to win her third consecutive Shoprite LPGA Classic title.

Amazingly, we have not gone this long into the LPGA season without a repeat winner in over a quarter century.  Will this incredible streak of unpredictability continue?  The answer will come this week, starting June 8, as the Tour makes its way to Canada for the first time this year at the Manulife LPGA Classic.

The Waterloo region will once again play host to the tournament, marking the event’s sixth year in existence.  It will be the third year in a row the tournament will be held at Whistle Bear Golf Club.  The beautiful, links-style course should present an interesting challenge for this year’s competitors.  And if recent history holds true, we should be in for another thrilling finish.  The last two Manulife Classics have come down to the final holes, with the winning margin being a single stroke.

Last year, Caroline Masson fended off a half dozen other golfers, all of whom were within 2 strokes of the lead, to get her first ever win on the LPGA Tour.  That group included the current top 2 players in the world, Lydia Ko and Ariya Jutanugarn.  This year’s field will be just as star-studded, with many of the top women’s golfers in the game making their way to Cambridge.

While the historically great crowds should provide a warm welcome to all these amazing athletes, perhaps the warmest welcome will be for Canada’s own Brooke Henderson.  The young phenom from Smiths Falls, ON will be returning to her home province, hoping to build momentum as she prepares to defend her Women’s PGA Championship later this month.

Brooke has had a solid season thus far, with 6 finishes in the top 15 and 2 top 10 finishes, but she is still in search of her first win this year.  It would be especially nice to get that win on Canadian soil.  Her best showing at the Manulife LPGA Classic was a T35 in her first attempt as an amateur in 2013.  But this young woman has proven to have a grit and determination beyond her years (yes, she’s STILL only 19 years old), so we are sure she will be up for the challenge.

And Golf Town will be there, giving you exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage of the tournament on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.  The Golf Town tent will also be up, where we will be holding our longest drive competition, giving participants the chance to win a great prize pack courtesy of TaylorMade.
