Dundas, Ont.’s Mackenzie Hughes took almost three years to nearly to get back to the top of the leaderboard, coming up one shot short of winner Graeme McDowell at Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship in the Dominican Republic.
Hughes, who won the RSM Classic in 2016, bogeyed the final hole to finish at 17-under in a tie for second, one shot behind McDowell. Hughes finished tied with Chris Stroud.
Thanks @CoralesChamp for a great week. Disappointed to finish the way I did, but congrats to @Graeme_McDowell on the W! Onto @valerotxopen #onwardsandupwards

This was one of Hughes’ best tournaments of late. He shot 6-under in the final two rounds to vault near the lead. About a month ago, Hughes switched up the equipment in his bag, moving to PING’s new G410 Plus Driver and 5-wood.
McDowell made a seven-foot birdie on the par 3 17th to take the lead, and Stroud bogeyed the final two holes to fall one shot behind.
Hughes’ last Top 10 came last year at the RBC Canadian Open. Hughes struggled last year after his breakout season, which featured a win in his first few events on the PGA Tour.
