Luke List prevailed victorious to claim his first career victory in 206 starts. On the Canadian side there was also history made this week as a record-setting nine players represented the Red and White.
A major championship golf course that has seen its fair share of thrilling finishes, Torrey Pines once again delivered the goods at the Farmers Insurance Open as Luke List claimed his first PGA Tour victory in a playoff over Will Zalatoris. In an unusual Saturday finish, the dreamy coastlines of Southern California provided the backdrop for seriously entertaining golf down the stretch, which saw a multitude of players put themselves in contention come the back nine Saturday. Amidst a tightly packed leaderboard with the likes of Jon Rahm, Jason Day and Justin Rose jockeying for position, List went out early and posted a stellar round of six-under 66, giving him the solo clubhouse lead for much of the afternoon. That was until Zalatoris failed to convert his birdie in regulation on the par-5 18th hole, resulting in a playoff between two players with no Tour victories to their names. After both tee shots found the fairway bunker, it was List who struck his third-shot approach within inches of the pin on 18, setting up a kick-in birdie and victory.
For Canadian golf fans, this week was also one of history and promise
Whether you’re a casual viewer or an ardent observer of the sport, you’ve surely noticed an increasing presence of maple leafs festooning PGA Tour leaderboards as of late. For a country that’s quite literally frozen for months at a time, it’s odds-defying for any one player to make their way onto golf’s grandest stage, let alone the record-setting nine who teed it up in San Diego this week for the Farmer’s Insurance Open. With the exception of the Canadian Open, this is the highest number of Canadians to enter any PGA Tour field. But the timing of this achievement is no fluke, and is more indicative of golf’s ascendancy in a country that’s better-known for sweeping rocks on ice than stroking putts on Poa Annua.
The previous record of Canadian competitors in a PGA Tour event was eight, which has happened nine times and was first set in 2018. With Monday qualifiers Jared Du Toit and Maxwell Sear seeing their way into the tournament, a new milestone was reached.
Golf fans will remember Du Toit’s sensational play at the 2016 RBC Canadian open, where he entered the weekend just one-shot off the lead, finishing with a highly impressive T9 finish. This week marks Maxwell Sear’s first PGA Tour event, a massive accomplishment for the 24-year-old whose professional golf is primarily played on PGA Tour Canada
Leading the Canadian contingent is Listowell, Ontario’s own Corey Conners, ranking 40th in the world. The remaining six include veterans Adam Hadwin, Mackenzie Hughes and Nick Taylor, followed by Michael Gligic and rookies Adam Pendrith and Adam Svensson. Pendrith was low Canadian for the week with a T16 finish, followed by Taylor (T30), Gligic (77) and Svensson (79).
