Golf Canada recently announced the athletes who have been chosen to represent Team Canada as part of the 2018 National Amateur Squad.
In all, eight athletes comprise Team Canada’s National Amateur Squad including four players on the men’s team and four on the women’s.
“Based on their outstanding performances this year, we are pleased to announce the young men and women chosen to represent Canada as part of the national team program,” said Jeff Thompson, Golf Canada’s chief sport officer. These talented athletes are a product of a circle of support that includes personal coaches, parents and provincial high-performance programs and will proudly represent Canada on the global golf stage.”
Canada’s National Amateur Team program incorporates advanced coaching, sport science expertise, training camps and world-class competition. Players who are selected to the National Amateur and National Developmental Teams represent Canada at six to 10 internationally-sanctioned golf competitions throughout the year. The intent of this comprehensive program is to aid Canada’s top up-and-coming amateur players in all areas of their development, helping Canada produce the best golfers in the world.
The following athletes have been selected to Team Canada’s 2018 Amateur Squad:
WOMEN’S NATIONAL AMATEUR SQUAD
Maddie Szeryk, Allen, Tex., Ontario Public Player (21)
The Women’s National Amateur Squad will see all four members return from last year’s team including four-year returning member and dual-citizen Maddie Szeryk, who had another stellar season as Canada’s top-ranked female. The 21-year-old captured wins at the B.C. Amateur, Women’s Western and Dr. Donnis Invitational.
Naomi Ko, Victoria, B.C., Olympic View Golf Club (20)
Victoria, B.C., native Naomi Ko solidified her return to the Amateur Squad after an impressive 2016 campaign that featured wins at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship and PNGA Women’s Amateur, plus Top-10 performances at the Canadian Women’s Amateur, Porter Cup and World Amateur Team Championship.
Jaclyn Lee, Calgary, Alta., Glencoe Golf & Country Club (20)
Calgary’s Jaclyn Lee also returns for a third year on the Amateur Squad. She makes her return following a collegiate season that included five top-20 finishes as a sophomore for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Grace St-Germain, Ottawa, Ont., Camelot Golf & Country Club (19)
Rounding out the women’s team is 19-year-old Grace St-Germain. The Ottawa native will enter her second season with the Amateur Squad after spending two seasons with the Development Squad and one with Team Ontario.
MEN’S NATIONAL AMATEUR SQUAD
Hugo Bernard, Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que., Laval sur-le-Lac Club (22)
Quebec’s Hugo Bernard is the lone returning member to this year’s Men’s Amateur Squad. The 22-year-old’s season was highlighted by his third-straight top-5 finish at the Canadian Men’s Amateur championship, which he won in 2016. The Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que., product also recorded top-10 finishes at Terra Cotta Invitational and South American Amateur.
Josh Whalen, Napanee, Ont., Napanee Golf & Country Club (22)
Napanee, Ont., native Josh Whalen makes his debut on the national team after an impressive season underlined by a T7 finish at the Canadian Amateur. The 22-year-old also posted a T6 result at the Sunnehanna Amateur in addition to six top-20 NCAA finishes for the Kent State Golden Flashes, the alma mater of Canadian PGA TOUR athletes Mackenzie Hughes and Corey Conners.
Joey Savoie, La Prairie, Que., Pinegrove Country Club (23)
Joey Savoie of La Prairie, Que., becomes the second Quebec product to be selected to the National Amateur Squad in 2018. His 2017 campaign was highlighted by a T2 finish at the Monroe Invitational.The 22-year-old will make his debut on the national squad.
Chris Crisologo, Richmond, B.C., Marine Drive Golf Club (21)
Rounding out the men’s team is British Columbia’s Chris Crisologo. Hailing from Richmond, Crisologo earned his spot on the national team on the strength of a T4 result at the B.C. Amateur and top-20 finishes at the Mexican Amateur and the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada’s Freedom 55 Financial Championship. The 21-year-old will be the youngest member of the National Men’s Amateur Squad.
