It came down to the wire, but thanks to an impressive effort by Corey Conners at the U.S. Open he not only notched his best career finish at that major championship, but he also punched a ticket to Paris.
Conners, who finished tied for ninth at the U.S. Open, earned enough world rankings points to jump Adam Hadwin for the second spot on the Canadian squad. Nick Taylor will also be heading to the Olympics.
Conners finished just a half-point (or thereabouts) ahead of Hadwin when the world rankings were made official Monday morning. Conners finished at No. 37 in the world after the Olympic qualifying period ended while Hadwin was No. 38.
“It is going to be a huge honour to represent Canada alongside all the other athletes,” said Conners. “It was a big goal of mine to make the team again this year and I can’t wait to get to Paris.”
Taylor was No. 35.
“The opportunity to represent my country at the Olympics has been a huge goal of mine for many years,” said Taylor. “To see the news become official today is quite humbling and surreal. I’m excited to get to Paris to compete, proudly wear the Maple Leaf, and soak in what I know will be an incredible experience.”
Both Taylor and Conners will attempt to become the first Canadian to win an Olympic golf medal since George Lyon’s gold medal in 1904 in St. Louis.
The men’s golf tournament at Paris will take place Aug. 1-4 at Le Golf National – previously a host club of the Ryder Cup.
The qualification period for selecting Team Canada’s two female athletes for the Paris 2024 Olympic golf competition ends on Sunday June 23 at the conclusion of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Golf Town Athlete Brooke Henderson has already firmed up a spot at her third Olympics.
