Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? Does it matter?
Regardless, this year’s British Open will be one of the most watched as the final major of the year returns to the Old Course at St. Andrews, one of golf’s most fabled venues. If the wind blows, look out—it could be a challenging week. But if it is calm, expect the best in the world—yeah, we’re looking at you Rory, and Mr. Thomas, as well as World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler—to record some pretty low scores on the ancient course.
The Contenders
The early betting odds for Champion Golfer of the Year look exactly like you might think: Rory McIlroy, John Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa are the favourites. Recent U.S. Open winner Matthew Fitzpatrick is also in the field at The Old Course and will surely be a player to watch. Tiger Woods is expected to play and looks to become the first three-time winner at the Old Course. Also expect to see some of the players from the breakaway LIV Golf Tour appear in Scotland, including Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson.
The Venue
The Old Course at St. Andrews will host its 30th Open Championship. Standing alone as the most iconic golf course in the history of the game, the Old Course hosted its first Open Championship in 1873 (which was won by Tom Kidd). On each occasion, the Old Course has been the stage for unforgettable championships and Champion Golfer of the Year such as Tiger Woods (2000, 2005); Bobby Jones (1927); Sam Snead (1946); Jack Nicklaus (1970, 1978); Seve Ballesteros (1984); James Braid (1905, 1910); and John Daly (1995). Golf was first played on the grounds of St. Andrews as far back as the mid 1400’s, however, the famous Old Tom Morris designed the current 18-hole Old Course layout in 1873. For the most part the land on which the Old Course sits is flat, but features many subtle mounds, 112 bunkers and features seven double-greens. Famous landmarks dotting the Old Course include The Swilcan Bridge (and Swilcan Burn); the Hell Bunker; The Road Hole (and Road Hole Bunker); Valley of Sin; and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. On Sunday’s (except for the Sunday of the Open Championship), the Old Course is closed for golf and turned into a public park where people are free to walk (many with their dogs) and enjoy the oldest golf property for free.
Canadians
Both Dundas, Ont.’s Mackenzie Hughes and Listowel, Ont.’s Corey Conners are teeing it up in their first Open Championship at St. Andrews. Both contended last year at Royal St. George’s, with Conners finishing T15 and Hughes in a tie for sixth.
