Golf Town athlete Brooke Henderson was the biggest star of Hollywood this week on the LPGA Tour!
Brooke captured her 10th career LPGA Tour title at the Hugel-Air Premia LA Open. She won by one shot over Jessica Korda and two over Hannah Green and good friend Jin Young Ko, who sprayed Brooke with water after the win.
Brooke was four shots back of the lead heading into Saturday’s finale but raced out to a hot start, birding two of her first five holes of the day. She ended up shooting 4-under 67.
The shot of the day came on the par-3 12th when Brooke chipped in from off the green for a birdie. Ko made bogey on the same hole and the tides turned in Brooke’s favour.
“I was definitely disappointed that I missed the green there. Fortunately I had a lot of green to work with. My lie wasn’t great, so Brit probably said it’s gone come in low and, hot and it did a little bit,” said Brooke. “But to catch the hole and make birdie there it was definitely a huge momentum change, and I think that’s probably what won it today.”
Brooke made a bogey on the second-last hole of the tournament and then fired her tee shot on the par-3 18th over the green. But, she hit a miraculous chip to just a few feet and that sealed the deal.
“Especially down the stretch there… I think as I age I’m getting more nerves. But I was just really happy with how I went out today. I was a lot of shots back, but I just said to myself to keep the same game plan and try to make as many birdies as I could,” said Brooke. “I’m just really happy with how everything turned out.”
Brooke was already Canada’s winningest golfer on the LPGA or PGA Tour after she won for the ninth time in her career in 2019. However, she hadn’t found the winner’s circle since that win. She played only 10 times last year in a COVID-19-shortened season but did finish inside the top-10 six times.
She became the first golfer in Canada’s history to get double-digit wins after her California triumph Saturday.
“I felt like I was playing really great golf. It just wasn’t my time. God has a plan for everything, and I’m just really happy,” said Brooke. “Brit and I been working really hard, and so it’s nice to get the win and get some confidence back.”
Brooke tees it up next on the LPGA Tour at the Pure Silk Championship May 20-23.
Congratulations, Brooke!
