Golf’s mad scientist might have a new nickname—unbeatable.
That’s how Bryson DeChambeau appears after winning the second week of the FedExCup, his second-straight win in the PGA Tour’s playoff series.
DeChambeau closed during the final round of the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston on Labour Day Monday with 67 and an overall score of 16-under par, finishing two shots ahead of Justin Rose, who many expected would make a charge. Rose played well—finishing at 3-under in the final round and 14-under par overall—but fell short of DeChambeau, who vaulted into the lead by shooting 63 during the third round. Rose is third in the FedExCup standings, behind DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson.
DeChambeau, who is known for his one-length clubs and near-scientific approach to the game, was paired in the third round with his childhood idol, Tiger Woods. With DeChambeau all but a lock for a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, there’s a chance he might be paired with Woods, who is a likely captain’s pick if he doesn’t make the time.
“He’s my childhood idol,” DeChambeau said. “I’ve admired him my whole entire life. And to be finally able to play with him under tournament conditions, it was different. I was a little nervous, for sure. But I was able to get out there and execute shots and worry about my game and focus on hitting the best shots possible. And I was able to play really well like that.”
