Brooke Henderson wins in Hawaii to tie all-time Canadian win record

Eight is great – just ask Golf Town athlete Brooke Henderson.

Henderson defended her title at the LOTTE Championship in Hawaii, winning by four shots over Eun-Hee Ji.

Her first win of 2019 marked her eighth all-time on the LPGA Tour – at just 21 – which ties her with Sandra Post for the most by a Canadian. She also ties Mike Weir and George Knudson, who had eight wins on the PGA Tour.

But as Post herself said on the Golf Channel telecast, Henderson, she believes, will surpass her record.

“I think she’ll go running by my record,” said Post, “and I think it’s going to be fun to watch.”

Henderson’s margin of victory was the same as her win in 2018 in Hawaii, her first of two wins last year (she of course went on to win the CP Women’s Open in August, another title she’ll look to defend later this summer).

“It’s been surreal the last three years,” Henderson said on the broadcast after her win was official. “It’s amazing to get this win and tie Sandra and Mike (Weir). I’m just so happy!”

The 21-year-old has had a steady season so far in 2019. Although she battled an illness after the first tournament of the year, Henderson hasn’t finished outside the top-20 at any tournament where she’s found the weekend.

Henderson, from Smiths Falls, Ont., was just 17 when she won her first LPGA Tour title. She’s won at least once in every one of her LPGA Tour seasons so far.

Saturday in Hawaii she was steady all day long and simply outlasted her competitors.

She made just one mistake – a bogey on the first hole of the day – but was able to right the ship and go 3-under over her next 10 holes. On a blustery Hawaiian day, Henderson was able to play consistently.

She credited her fantastic family support as the key to her early-career success.

“It’s incredible,” she said. “My parents have sacrificed so much to be able to have Brittany and I live this dream.”

Nothing was a dream about her week in Hawaii, however. After a 2-under-par 70 in the final round, Henderson topped a serious group of competitors including multi-time LPGA Tour winners Ariya Jutanugarn, Minjee Lee, Nelly Korda, and So Yeon Ryu.

With the win Henderson moves into the top-10 on the season-long Race to the CME Globe, and back inside the top-10 in the world rankings.
