Brooke Henderson wins in Hawaii

Dedicating her win at the LOTTE Championship to the Humboldt Broncos, and saying she’s celebrating by going for a swim in the ocean, Brooke Henderson put on a wonderful performance in Hawaii to record for sixth victory on the LPGA Tour.

“There has also been that really bad accident that happened a couple weeks ago, I guess last week, in Saskatchewan,” Brooke said. “I just tried to stay strong for them, and I would like to dedicate this win to them as well.”

She added the accident in Saskatchewan, where a tractor trailer hit the bus of the SJHL Humboldt Broncos hockey team, killing 16 people, had hit her personally. Brooke was a goalie until golf required her full-time dedication.

“It’s extremely sad—a terrible tragedy what happened up there,” she said.  “I know it kind of affected my whole country. Everybody really took it kind of personally.

“For all the survivors that are still fighting through it and all the ones that have passed away, I want to show them that we’re here for them and we’re supporting them. They’re always going to be in our thoughts and prayers.”

Brooke, a Golf Town Athlete, then added that a swim in the Pacific Ocean following her round “sounds pretty fun,” and thanked her sister and caddy, Brittany, for the support during the week.

Though there were some stumbles in the third round that cut her lead, Brooke played strongly in the final round, battling high winds that led to ballooning scores for some players. But Brooke played well throughout, later saying she’d had one of her best ball-striking rounds. She carded four birdies and a solitary bogey during a round in which crosswinds made scoring a challenge. Brooke finished 3-under for the round, and 12-under for the tournament, four shots ahead of Azahara Munoz.

“I felt like my ball striking was probably the best it’s ever been—I know this year it’s been really great,” Brooke says. “I just kind of trusted in that, picked lines, and talked with Brit a lot about different yardages, where to hit it, where to start it. The wind was moving it ten, fifteen yards at times. So [I was] just trying to be confident and make smart decisions.”

In the end, Brooke said she was exactly where she wanted to be—in regular contention at tournaments with a solid chance to win.

“You just always want that chance to win,” she said. “That’s what every golfer wants every single week—that ability, that when they’re in contention, they have a chance on the back nine on Sunday to do something great.

“I was able to put myself in that position and capitalize on it, which was really cool.”
