O Canada.
For the first time in 45 years, a Canadian woman is the winner of the country’s national open. And doing it in confident style, with a massive crowd of fans cheering her on, was Golf Town Athlete Brooke Henderson, who captured the CP Women’s Open at Wascana Country Club by four shots.
“It’s amazing, just surreal,” Brooke said immediately following her win. “The crowds here have been so amazing all week.”
Finish it off she did. Brooke held a slight lead heading into the back nine when she found something truly special. Instead of playing to hold a lead, she became a birdie machine, making birdies on four of her last six holes to open up a significant lead heading into the 18th. On the tight final hole, Henderson hit a great drive and a tight approach, making a short birdie to close at 65, 21-under par for the tournament.
“Today’s round was really special, to have five birdies on the back nine with no bogeys,” Brooke said. “And to finish it off the way I did is a dream come true.”
It is a dream finish for Brooke. While the 20-year old has played well, including a win, she has had struggles away from the course, with the death of two of her grandparents. When asked about it following her round, Brooke was obviously filled with emotion and struggled to put her feelings into words.
After the round, she thanked her family—including her father, who works as her coach, and sister, Brittany, who is her caddy, and friends for their support. “All the hard work my family has put into this—this was a big dream for all of us, and it was a cumulative effort,” she said.
Throughout the round, Brooke’s strong iron and wedge play put her with birdie chances. Using her length off the tee, Brooke had great scoring opportunities, but none more obvious than the drive on 18, which left her with 69 yards into the green.
With thousands of fans following her every shot, including the Brooke Brigade of young junior golfers, Brooke, started the final round with a one-shot lead and made a birdie right out of the gate. The crowd was present throughout—eventually breaking into an impromptu “O Canada” as she finished her round.
While she made a bogey on the second hole, even then no golfer really challenged her over the course of the round. Angel Yin, who started in second, shot even par on the front, and could not catch up, despite making four birdies on the back. Yin would finish in second.
With the victory, Brooke became the first Canadian in 45-years to claim Canada’s national women’s open. Jocelyne Bourassa was the last Canadian to win the tournament, taking the title in 1973. No Canadian man has won the country’s national open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
In many ways it is the culmination of an amazing career filled with remarkable achievements, even though Brooke is barely out of her teens. She first played in the CP Women’s Open in 2012 as a 14-year old. Since then she has seven LPGA wins, including this weeks’ CP Women’s Open and a major championship victory.
“I was happy to break that long stretch of a Canadian not winning,” she said. “To look at this trophy and see the incredible names on it, it is remarkable to see my name will be on it.”
But true to her humble roots, Brooke wasn’t going to take all the credit for the win: “To win it for Canada is really cool,” she said moments after holing her last putt.
Indeed it was—truly a win for the ages, and hopefully one of many to come.
Congratulations Brooke! Well done! We are so proud of you! Wishing you many more successes in your golf career.
GREAT HOPE THIS ONLY THE START OF GREATER ONEBYET TO COME.
Great Brooke! I grew up not far from Smith Falls. I am so proud of your accomplishments
Brooke Henderson is a true inspiration for young and old golfers as I in Canada and a special young lady. She displays maturity far beyond her age and I’m sure everyone admires her as a Canadian champion golfer.
We are so proud of Brooke and her sister. They are a special couple. Their parents must be over the moon.
Congratulations Brooke, congratulations the whole Henderson family for supporting Brooke’s achievements. Thank you Brittany, for your devotion to Brooke’s career and success. Thank you Golf Town, Ping, and all of Brooke’s sponsors for your ongoing commitment to Canadian golf athletes throughout the years.
