Brooke Henderson Looks To Defend Her Evian Championship Title

She held off a hard-charging Mao Saigo of Japan, an American, Sophia Schubert, looking for her first major triumph, Lydia Ko in the middle of a Player of the Year season, and a heaping handful of European Solheim Cup stalwarts.

But in the end, Brooke Henderson won the 2022 Amundi Evian Championship by one shot for her second major-championship title.

And now she’ll return looking for more major success.

This year’s Evian Championship will once again be the fourth major on the calendar, with the Evian Resort Golf Club playing host to the $6.5-million (U.S.) prize fund.

Recent winners of the event include the who’s who of women’s golf, including Minjee Lee, world No.1 Jin Young Ko, three-time major champs Anna Nordqvist and In Gee Chun, plus Lydia Ko, who won by a record six shots in 2015.

All of the game’s top players will be in the field led by each of the three major champs so far this season – Lilia Vu (Chevron Championship), Ruoning Yin (KPMG Women’s PGA Championship), and Allisen Corpuz (U.S. Women’s Open). In fact, the last 20 major championships on the LPGA Tour have all been won by different golfers. The only repeat winner was Jin Young Ko, who won both the Chevron Championship and The Evian Championship in 2019. Since Ko’s 2019 triumph in France, each LPGA major winner has been different – a trend to keep an eye on for this year’s Evian Championship.

Yin, who won the DIO Implant LA Open earlier in the season before her KPMG Women’s PGA triumph, sits first on the LPGA Tour’s Race to CME Globe season-long points list, while Ko remains as the No.1-ranked golfer in the world.

But despite an impressive year on the LPGA Tour from all the top names, it’s Golf Town Athlete Brooke Henderson who will look to successfully defend her Evian Championship title – something she is very much looking forward to.

“It’s always an amazing feeling to get two wins on the LPGA tour in a season,” said Brooke of her Evian Championship win a year ago. “To have (the wins) close together, and then to get my second major championship, it has felt like a little while since 2016 when I won my first.

“It was definitely worth the wait, this one.”

Maddie Szeryk is the other Canadian set to join the field. She will be making her Evian Championship debut.
