The inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur tournament kicks off today with one Canadian in the field— twenty-year-old Brigitte Thibault. There are 70 women at the tournament, but Thibault, a first-year golfer playing at Fresno State, is the top-ranked Canadian female amateur.

Seventy golfers will tee it up in the tournament for the first two rounds, which are held at Augusta’s Champions Retreat Golf club. The field will be cut to the Top 30, with the final being played at Augusta National on Saturday ahead of the Masters. The tournament is seen as part of an effort by Augusta National and the Masters to promote women’s golf.

“I wanted to do this, and I wanted to do it here,” Augusta Chair Fred Ridley said last year. “I thought for us to have the greatest impact on women’s golf that we needed to be committed to do it here at Augusta National.” The world’s top female amateur golfer, Jennifer Kupcho, is part of the tournament.

Thibault, a member of Canada’s National Women’s Amateau team, hails from Rosemere, Quebec. She qualified for the CP Women’s Open at 17, despite having only played golf for two years. She had three Top 10 finishes this year at Fresno State
