80-71 OF SCOREGOLF‘S TOP 100 CANADIAN COURSES

80. Nicklaus North Golf Course – Public
Whistler, B.C.

Nicklaus North is as pretty on the eyes as it is fun to play, what with it situated at the base of snow-capped mountains and playing around emerald-coloured lakes. The number 80 course on our list is one of few to bear architect Jack Nicklaus’ name.

79. Point Grey Golf and Country Club – Private
Vancouver, B.C. Giveaway Date: July 12

A David Ayton, Jr., design, Vancouver’s Point Grey has undergone recent work by Riley Johns, with new holes built to accommodate a top-notch practice facility. The course was a favourite of PGA Tour Canada players when it held one of the circuit’s events.

78. Le Club Laval-sur-le-Lac – Green – Private
Laval, Quebec

The Green Course at Laval-sur-le-Lac climbs to number 78 this time around. It is an original Willie Park, Jr., design with a bunker renovation done by Ian Andrew. It holds its own when measured against the club’s Blue Course, giving Laval one of Canada’s best one-two punches.

77. Vancouver Golf Club – Private
Vancouver, B.C.

On dramatic land outside of Vancouver in Coquitlam, Vancouver Golf Club has finally been seen by enough of our raters to become Top 100 eligible, and it debuts at number 77. Several of its holes offer fantastic vistas of the Lower Mainland in the distance.

76. Wildfire Golf Club – Private
Lakefield, Ontario

Wildfire makes a solid climb this time around, jumping 15 spots to number 76. The Thomas McBroom cottage country course uses parts of the Canadian shield for aesthetic beauty and secluded playing corridors.

75. Tarandowah Golfers Club – Semiprivate
Avon, Ontario Giveaway Date: July 12

Tarandowah, a Martin Hawtree design in rural southwestern Ontario, is finally getting love from our panellists. Number 95 all the way back on the 2010 Top 100, it returns to the list in a top-75 position this year. A links-like course, Tarandowah is best described in two words: pure golf.

74. Copper Creek Golf Club – Public
Kleinburg, Ontario

Copper Creek, north of Toronto, jumps five spots from 2020 and sits 74th. Doug Carrick designed this beauty, which has several holes winding through a wooded valley. Its most memorable assignment is the drop-shot par-4 10th, where water lurks along the left-hand side.

73. Dundarave Golf Cousre – Public
Roseneath, P.E.I.

A public paradise on Prince Edward Island, Dundarave, with its distinctive red-sand bunkers and holes playing along the Brudenell River, returns to the Top 100. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed Dundarave at the turn of the 21st century and it’s delighted golfers ever since.

72. Scarboro Golf and Country Club – Private
Scarborough, Ontario

Scarboro Golf and Country Club is the lone Canadian design of the great A.W. Tillinghast. At number 72, the course climbs, drops, twists and turns from start to finish. The east-end Toronto layout has an excellent set of tempting short par 4s.

71. Lookout Point Country Club – Private
Fonthill, Ontario

Lookout Point, a Walter J. Travis course that this year ranks 71st in the country, starts off with a bang — a downhill par 4 offering views of the Niagara Falls skyline far off in the distance. Tight fairways and tiny greens defend par at this lovely course.
