70-61 OF SCOREGOLF‘S TOP 100 CANADIAN COURSES

70. Northern Bear Golf Course – Public
Sherwood Park, Alberta

Northern Bear is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course featuring fairways that blend seamlessly with tall trees and five lakes to keep golfers on their toes. This course has long been a popular pick for public golfers in and around Edmonton.

69. Brantford Golf and Country Club – Private
Brantford, Ontario Giveaway Date: July 13

A Thompson design — but one by Nicol, Stanley’s brother — Brantford Golf and Country Club is most certainly a ball-striker’s course with its narrow fairways and tough greens. A massive tree-removal program over the last decade has been very beneficial.

68. Rosedale Golf Club – Private
Toronto, Ontario

In the heart of Toronto, Rosedale was designed by the great Donald Ross and makes good use of its property’s dales, ridges and meandering creeks. The variety of its par 3s stands out as a defining characteristic.

67. Wolf Creek Resort – Old – Public
Ponoka, Alberta

The original course at Wolf Creek, the first solo design by Rod Whitman, who later gained prominence when he created Cabot Links, is an ode to Old World links marked by native fescue areas, devilish pot bunkers and large, undulating greens.

66. Royal Mayfair Golf Club – Private
Edmonton, Alberta

The host of several CP Women’s Opens over the years, Royal Mayfair in Edmonton is yet another sweet Stanley Thompson design with rolling fairways and complex greens. It ranks 66th this time around.

65. Maple Downs Golf and Country Club – Private
Maple, Ontario Giveaway Date: July 13

The star of the show at Maple Downs, north of Toronto, is its fabulous, billowing property ideally suited for golf. An original William F. Mitchell design, it underwent a full restoration/ renovation in recent years by Ian Andrew.

64. Riverside Country Club – Private
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Giveaway Date: July 15

Saskatchewan’s top course continues to impress and climbs another 11 spots to number 64. Scottish architect Bill Kinnear did the original work along the Saskatchewan River, which was later enhanced by the skills of Graham Cooke and Wayne Carleton.

63. Black Bear Ridge – Public
Belleville, Ontario

Black Bear Ridge was the brainchild of the late Brian Magee, who bypassed big-name architects to design his Belleville, Ontario, course by himself. He did a wonderful job with several holes cut through tall pines, particularly coming home.

62. Talking Rock Golf Course – Semiprivate
Chase, B.C. Giveaway Date: July 15

Long one of Canada’s hidden gems is hidden no more. After cracking our Top 59 Public Courses, Talking Rock debuts in fantastic fashion on the Top 100, ranking 62nd. Primarily the work of Wayne Carleton, the course on Little Shuswap Lake in B.C.’s interior is as pretty as it is enjoyable.

61. Burlington Golf and Country Club – Private
Burlington, Ontario

Burlington Golf and Country Club makes a massive jump up this year’s list, going from number 95 in 2020 to number 61 this year. Several improvements, including the removal of many trees, has made a big difference to the original Stanley Thompson design.

  1. Need more Manitoba courses. Southwood. Niakwa. Pine ridge. Elmhurst. Clearlake. Granite Hills. Falcon lake. Nicer courses than some on this list for sure.
